Chuck Buck Signed 301 Cadet

YES THEY Etched a small fb on the blade ---and yes I think you are right it was 2011 they quit etching fb --it was ugly--glad they did...I will try to find out when they quit etching the blade fb....
You’re right, wish they would have stopped before I got mine.

Academic now though, it was stolen.

I'm beginning to think the knives STDK and myself have aren't blems but made like that. Still hope Jeff investigates and comes along to tell us.

I wouldn't swear to it, but I believe I've seen no shield chairman slippys before. If my memory doesn't fail me, which likely it has, I thought there might have been a small discussion on it a few years ago.

I agree with you Winchester 73. I believe these were sent out of the Buck plant as regular production knives. The different dates of manufacture on mine seem to prove it was not a random thing. Enjoy your knife, I know I will mine.

The 2010 Buck catalog shows the signature on the "mark" side, and the 2011 catalog shows the signature on the "pile" side. I have a 309 from 2010 without a shield, and a 301 from 2012 with a shield.

Hope I got a legit one. It doesn't show as having a buck shield on the side opposite the signature. From stampings I think it's legit. Has a left pointing arrow so made in 2010?

To add to the confusion or clarification I have the same 301 made the same year that was purchased from SMKW and it also has no shield. I always thought it was supposed to be that way. I prefer it.

We did stop etching FB on the blades years ago. It was a lot of labor to prevent the occasional dis-honest person complaining about a cosmetic flaw.

If I remember right (which is always a crap shoot at my age) the early chairman series had no shield. This is supported by the catalog photos between the two years. There is always old stock in the field when we make these changes and we typically won't change the part # for a change like this.

I hope this helps..

Jeff

Old thread but my 301 is also has the Chuck Buck etch on the stamp side, no shield on the opposite side and is a 2010 model. Maybe it is just a change made from 2010 to 2011 adding the shield.
