Chuck, CJ, or Joe . . . what happened with Strider?

Recently there's been some controversy over the Buck Ghost Rider borrowing some features from Strider knives.

Now, as I understand it, the partnership between Buck and Strider is over.

What happened? Did Buck and Strider ever reach an understanding over the Ghost Rider? Why did the collaboration end?

I met with Duane a few weeks ago before the blade show. Duane was swamped with production needed to be done for Blade so our time was short.

Duane expressed some thoughts on different directions Strider was going and was going to get back to me by the end of June when he had the Blade Show behind him as to what it meant to future collaborations.

So...we will know something in a few weeks.

Was it Strother in Cool Hand Luke who said "What we have here is a failure to communicate"

It may just be me, but take a look at some of Mick's posts here before he left.

For the most part he is an ass.

They do make a great product and maybe one day I'll own a real Strider in addition to the Buck collaberations, but his attitude is way over the top.

Again, all in my opinion and YMMV, but in a business-to-business type agreement, I don't know if I would want to deal with him. He sees any little bit of critsim as an attack, and returns what he sees as a slight three-fold. Maybe this is just his "Web Board" personna, and in real life he is a dream to deal with. All I have is his posts I read here, at Usual Suspects and the Badlands.

Glassjax,

You are awfully free with your descriptions of a good man with obviously no information.

Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than say something without the benefit of knowledge and remove all doubt.

Please inform me then. You are obviously in the know.

I reiterated several times that those were my opinions and what they were based on.

Do you know him personally? Are a longtime customer? Meet him at a knife show? Dated his sister? What are your opinions based on?

Fill me in why there isn’t a Strider forum here anymore? I’ve read a lot of archives, but defiantly there are gaps in my knowledge. I’d like to hear the whole story.

It was the "he's an ass" part that I disagree with.

To avoid a complete sidebar on this forum, why don't we chat via PM.

If you really are interested in facts, you might also ask him directly at either of the two forums you mentioned.

GlassJax, you could at least reference the threads that gave you this opinion. And I agree with jhillas. You could have left the "he's an ass" out of your original post and still gotten your point across just as effectively.

If you’d like to correspond with me, feel free to use the forum’s e-mail function. I do not have access to the PMs. I am going on vacation this evening for a week, so you probably won’t see a reply from me till around Sat. the 24th of June.

Like I stated before, I’ve read a lot of the archives and what my impression is has been stated. I’ll stand by it. I am a Marine (7+ years active, 5 years reserve and counting). I am not some high-speed squirrel type running through the jungles in cammie paint and a loin cloth. I have no Combat Action Ribbon. For the most part, Marines are blunt and to-the-point, which seems to be your criticism of my previous post.

Since Guyon requested it, here are a few examples. These were all found by using the “Advanced Search” function and querying for all post by user “Mick Strider”. There are many more.

A few examples of the ugly:

This entire post is worth reading. Started by Mick and titled “This Forum Sucks!!”

Just two of many. In my opinion, the bad part with Mick is the tone he sets. People see him as a leader and follow suit. This leads to entire posts of bickering and rants back and forth, with little to no useful dialog.

But it is all not bad. Here is an example of Mick showing some real class in the CRK forum. I’m sure if you look, you can find many others like this…

Someone made that up. We even replace the ones he breaks.
You guys are doing a great job of not flaming each other. Thanks for that....
You FOR SURE cant go wrong with a Sebbie.....Great knife.

From what I’ve read, the “good Mick” is more present then the “evil Mick”, as long as the posts do not question Mick’s gear or personal reputation. But even the most innocent of inquires have lead to Mick's harsh responses.

Of course, YMMV,
Jax

If you have a few hours, check out this thread on tactical forums. Some enlightening posts about and from Mick, including about his prison time.

From a few months ago.

This is relivant to the Buck connection as Mick was leagally told he can not claim any military service anymore in any marketing, including in his collaberations with Buck knives.

SKI shall take immediate actions to correct any such representations currently made on its own website (see Exhibit B) and to the extent possible shall take immediate actions to correct any such representations by its business partners, including but not limited to advertising regarding SKI's partnership and distribution through Buck Knives.

I cannot believe that Mick Strider said those things.

Personally after reading his posts, I want nothing to do with anything he sells, or makes or does.

:thumbdn:

well i maby did not realy want a buck colaberation that bad either...
with that kind of information and knowing the Buck famley and their convections i am suprised they worked with him... or maby they did not know

Gotta admit, this tidbit alone is kinda alarming.

"Since Mick Strider (aka Mickey Ray Burger) already has THREE felony convictions (Armed Carjacking, Use of a Firearm During the Commission of a Violent Felony, Transporting a Stolen Vehicle across State Lines)"

TLC,

Where did you find that? I gotta tell ya if that's true things are really looking like crap for him. So his last name is not "Strider"?

Edit: Nevermind. Found it.

Wow, that's nuts.

Guys- This is pretty old news. From what came out the last time this made it's rounds:
1. Mick did commit a crime. It involved (if memory serves) mick, a gun, a test drive of a new car with the car salesman. Don't temeber the details...but No one was hurt.
2. The three felonies were all received during the same crime.
3. Mick went to prison, payed his debt, and spent his time learning all he could about making knives.
4. Several people were involved in a campaign to ruin Strider. I believe people involved incuded several players in the knife and gear world. This involved hiring P.I's, and publishing personal and family information about divorce cases, custody cases, etc. His wife's and kids personal info were published on a public website! How would you feel about that?
5. I would take anything I read on tactical forums with a grain of salt, as they often delete threads/posts when someone has a differing opinion.
6. While you are talking about past service/experience, someone busted the the owner of MD's forums about HIS claim to be an operator in bad places....didn't happen.
7. Strider screwed up when he was younger, paid for it, and has become a successful knifemaker, IMO.

Again, this info is available at other forums(not TF), and I hope I didn't miss anything or give any false info. This is what I remember. Have a good one!

jokrswylde,

Thanks for the info. I didn't know it was old news. Is he a good guy now? Is he active at any forum anymore?

Thanks. :)

Normally I dont post anything unless somebody asks me a question personally, I always thought that the sworde was mighter than the pen, but I was wrong. Several people years ago said some bad things about me on this Forum that wernt true, But a lot of my Customers that I had known for 20 years or more called me to see if these things were true, it took me alot of time and phone calls to defend myself of these charges, cause at that time I never herd of Blade Forums and had no computer. Personal attacts should not be aloud to happen on these Forums. I have known Mick strider for at least 20 years he is a personal friend of mine, Yes he did screw up once in his life, He paid his det with no complaints like the Man that he is, Mick and his partner Duane Dwyer took Strider Knives where it is today with little help from outside. If mick and Duane were my Sons I couldent be more proude of what they have done for this industry and there Country. They have given more than any other Co. I know of. The Collaboration between Buck Knives And Strider Knives Has had a long sucsesfull run, and what happens next is between Mick, Duane and C. J. Buck. Im sure CJ will let you know when things settle down a bit. Even though we have been back in opperation for a year, we still have a lot going on up here that needs to be finished. Please excuse my spelling, and thanks for listning. Paul Bos.
