Chuck Robinson's anvils

Craig, I was a bit shaky about spending on a new anvil, but after thinking what you and your friend Craig H must have spent flying yours and his to your island i no longer felt bad at all! Let alone that LG, WHEW!

Sam that is something you won't regret and Chuck is an awesome guy to work with. My only regret is funding, I had to buy a 90#.

A local smith came over and is selling his hay budden to buy a Sea Robin.

Will,

Are you happy with the 90# I'm thinking about getting one I see it as a finishing tool more than for heavy work so the 90# seems like it will be OK?

Thanks Tim

I recently mooved up from a 110# anvil to a 260+or-10# anvil (Im not pickin this one up just to put it on the scales) and could imedeatly tell the differance. Although the smaller anvil has a better face on it and rings like a bell, the bigger anvil has a 5 1/2" face and decent rebound and makes moving the steel sooooo much easier. My advice would be to get the Biggest heaviest anvil you can afford.

OH and Congrats Sam on the new toy you will enjoy it.

Look cool Sam! but I have a question...Are their any advantages to that shape over the blacksmiths anvil? I wondered why they stand it up rather then lay it over on it side. It seems to me it would be a bigger better hammering surface then just that small square? or am I missing something as usual?

Jason

Jason, all the mass centered underneath makes for a very efficient working surface. When doing blades, I really only use the front corner by the horn next to the table, essentially a little square shape, so it maximizes the amount of mass under just that small space that is used for blades.

Tim,
I'm more than happy with the 90# for my smithing. I swing 4# hammer and have no problems with the anvil. I can keep the hammer bouncing off of the face just using finger pressure. I would love the big one but I didn't have the funds, I have no complaints about the 90. My anvil stand is 2x8s standing on end with all-thread holding them together. The top is routed out for the anvil to sit in.

Hey Sam,
I got me one when I went to Batsons Hammer-In last year. If you want to come down and test it you're welcome to.

Aldo

What weight did you end up with? What was the cost?

Have to email Chuck about cost. The final weight will be around 300 pounds with the stand he said.

Will thanks!!!! I was thinking on ordering the 90 he had in stock ready to go, but I figured why not go big while I can (nice to still live at home :D ).

Aldo, Do you have any weekends free?

Sam,

Sunday mornings. Other than that you have a prayer. (Which is what I do late Sunday afternoons). Give me a call. I just filled the tanks and I might as well get some use out of them. Besides, I have to convince Will I can still swing a hammer.

Aldo

You're gonna love it Sam...
Like alot of things... if you can swing it... get them while you can and while they are available... there's a much lower risk of any regrets when you acquire great long lasting tools... especially when they are no longer available...
The pride and satisfaction of owning and using them lasts a good long time after the initial "sting" of the price tag is gone...
JMHO...

Kali, well put. I had emailed Chuck years ago about getting one of his anvils, then he had said he had enough steel stock for 14 more anvils then that would be it. I didn't have the funds then, so I decided to wait. After seeing the thread over on Don Fogg's about Robert Kobayashi's getting done and ready to ship I decided to email him again and found out he only had enough for 4 more anvils! Ironed out the particulars with Chuck over email and sent the money order to reserve one large anvil before they are all gone.

I guess I could be completely happy to forge away on my regular anvils, I don't really do much forging anymore(well hehe, not as much as I used to). It will be nice to work on an anvil that I have wanted for a LONG time, that is perfectly made for bladework.

My 90#er arrived this morning and I gave it a quick test run this afternoon it is very sweet my old anvil is getting moved to the side :D

Guys,

Whatever you get from Chuck...

It will be more than what you paid for.

IN other words...and I do not say this lightly...

"A NUMBER HANNA"

"Top Quality!"

You BET!

And you can tell EVERYBODY I said SO!
