My wife and I love to go to all the shops on Main St and end up with an awesome meal at Dargan's Irish Pub and restaurant. I still have yet to try Bangers and mash. I cannot get past the steak and or the fish and chips part of the menu. The Irish counties are posted above, and I found out the Shreenans' are from Monahan, so I somehow feel at home there.

On Main st. are many antique shops and thrift shops. There are some knives to look at in the antique shops, but you have to scour the little glass shelves, and finding one you might actually purchase leaves you sad knowing they are priced about 2x too high as compared to Ebay. However, I did find a long tail C Case Peanut 1940's for about $25 plus tax. There was a large rust spot by the tang, but that so far is my best find in there. I still enjoy looking at all the old stuff. Take some allergy medicine with you, those shops can bring about some respiratory issues for my wife, kids and me sometimes.

Two really great shops for knife lovers are the Flag and cutlery shop right on Main St and Army surplus store on Oak st. The first shop has an old man mannequin/moving statue out front. Gary is a riot, quite outspoken, and fun to talk to. He enjoys talking about you more than selling you a knife. He asked my wife is she was sick when we walked in. I thought to myself, "this is just great, finally a knife store to visit and the old fart insults my wife as soon as we walk in!" However, his reference was that wives generally do not enjoy cutlery stores. I explained that I shop with my beloved for her Coach purses, so she shops knives with me too. All in all, my wife and I have a new friend. I purchased a "Don't tread on me" sticker and banner there. I may have sprung for a knife, but his selection was a little down. He did have a couple of the Bone Collectors, and I got to handle those. He just got in a load of Kershaw for anyone interested. I was looking at Benchmades. He did have a Cold Steel Espada under the glass, and it reminded me of my buddy Charlie Mike. I have handled his, so I did not ask to look at that one.

Next, we wanted to find Rocket Fizz candy store, it was off Main St. on Oak St. to the south/west (towards the ocean). On the way, we found the Military Surplus store, and Hallelujiah! what a knife display. I looked at a large qty of Spyderco, and also Benchmade. My wife and I discussed our financial situation, and I was able to guilt free purchase a knife on my list. A Benchmade 710 in D2. I am a happy camper. I feel one foot closer to heaven, knowing a knife on my list of really wants is one line shorter.

We ventured into the candy store, and I grabbed a Black Cherry soda with real sugar, some Zotz candy and chewy sweet tarts. Zotz reminds me of days gone by at my home town Little League baseball's snack shack. I love those candies.

If you ever get down towards Ventura co. exit the 101 at Main st. and enjoy the shops. They had a St. Patricks parade on Saturday, but we missed it. There were some beautiful classic hot rods up and down the street while we walked.

Hope you guys can make it sometime. CA needs the tax revenue, LOL.

A nice reminder of my youth ... thanks!

Went to USC around the time the dinosaurs were roaming the land. I think our original mascot (right before Tommy Trojan) was a mammoth. And not even a wooly one.:D

Hung out a lot up in the Valley and along the coast. Still remember that area well.

I do irrigation field work and right now working with City of Los Angeles Parks and Rec. so I do alot of Los Angeles, and all the way up to Santa Barbara. If you are ever in the east end of Ventura Co. please drop me an email or PM so I can treat you to lunch.

Don't know when ... but if I get out there, don't be surprised to hear from the old physicist.:)

Fantastic read, thank you for taking the time to share.

I'm on the East Coast but reading your post really brought me back to some more simpler times long ago in my area.

Thank you. :)

I'll be down in Oxnard visting my folks in May. Maybe we can get together. We moved to Oxnard in 1951, pop around 10K or less. Ventura was smaller. My folks still have the house they paid $13K for.

I do alot of work with Oxnard School District, maybe we can meet for lunch in Oxnard on a nice May day. Drop me a line a week before or so.

I like the Ventura Vibe; the scenery is awe-inspiring as well.
Now for the non-sequitur; someone still makes Zots?
I thought that went out the door with OldPhysics mascot.

Anytime you want to handle more knives... come back and we'll cook you and the wife some dinner. On second thoughts... maybe I'll move the cats to the garage first. This also goes for Old Physics and ANY other CA members. If you are near Fresno, come by for a knife show, dinner, and some mixed drinks.
