My wife and I love to go to all the shops on Main St and end up with an awesome meal at Dargan's Irish Pub and restaurant. I still have yet to try Bangers and mash. I cannot get past the steak and or the fish and chips part of the menu. The Irish counties are posted above, and I found out the Shreenans' are from Monahan, so I somehow feel at home there.
On Main st. are many antique shops and thrift shops. There are some knives to look at in the antique shops, but you have to scour the little glass shelves, and finding one you might actually purchase leaves you sad knowing they are priced about 2x too high as compared to Ebay. However, I did find a long tail C Case Peanut 1940's for about $25 plus tax. There was a large rust spot by the tang, but that so far is my best find in there. I still enjoy looking at all the old stuff. Take some allergy medicine with you, those shops can bring about some respiratory issues for my wife, kids and me sometimes.
Two really great shops for knife lovers are the Flag and cutlery shop right on Main St and Army surplus store on Oak st. The first shop has an old man mannequin/moving statue out front. Gary is a riot, quite outspoken, and fun to talk to. He enjoys talking about you more than selling you a knife. He asked my wife is she was sick when we walked in. I thought to myself, "this is just great, finally a knife store to visit and the old fart insults my wife as soon as we walk in!" However, his reference was that wives generally do not enjoy cutlery stores. I explained that I shop with my beloved for her Coach purses, so she shops knives with me too. All in all, my wife and I have a new friend. I purchased a "Don't tread on me" sticker and banner there. I may have sprung for a knife, but his selection was a little down. He did have a couple of the Bone Collectors, and I got to handle those. He just got in a load of Kershaw for anyone interested. I was looking at Benchmades. He did have a Cold Steel Espada under the glass, and it reminded me of my buddy Charlie Mike. I have handled his, so I did not ask to look at that one.
Next, we wanted to find Rocket Fizz candy store, it was off Main St. on Oak St. to the south/west (towards the ocean). On the way, we found the Military Surplus store, and Hallelujiah! what a knife display. I looked at a large qty of Spyderco, and also Benchmade. My wife and I discussed our financial situation, and I was able to guilt free purchase a knife on my list. A Benchmade 710 in D2. I am a happy camper. I feel one foot closer to heaven, knowing a knife on my list of really wants is one line shorter.
We ventured into the candy store, and I grabbed a Black Cherry soda with real sugar, some Zotz candy and chewy sweet tarts. Zotz reminds me of days gone by at my home town Little League baseball's snack shack. I love those candies.
If you ever get down towards Ventura co. exit the 101 at Main st. and enjoy the shops. They had a St. Patricks parade on Saturday, but we missed it. There were some beautiful classic hot rods up and down the street while we walked.
Hope you guys can make it sometime. CA needs the tax revenue, LOL.
