CKCA-Mini Show The Knives 2014

Great Stuff - looking forward to seeing them all in person. I also like the rules as posted by Kevin above. It's nice knowing that everyone has a fair chance. IMHO, getting a great knife from a great maker this way beats the heck out of being on a waiting list for a knife from the same maker!

Can I just say if anyone wins the Hanson folder or Mikes hunter and ends up selling at any point, put me down!! That hanson kills me.

Glad to hear you guys like the hunter! I have to credit my buddy Jon Brand for helping me settle on the decision to make this one. Over many conversations about many different knives, the "Hancock Style" hunters just kept popping back up. I hardly ever make hunters these days, but when I suggested that I might enjoy making one, he didn't miss a beat and sent me 2 of Tim's originals to study. Photos are great, but nothing compares to having a knife(or better yet, TWO:D) in-hand to look over and familiarize yourself with. That was priceless!

We both have a deep appreciation for Tim's work and this particular style of knife. The time I got to spend looking over the two he sent me just set the hooks in deeper! This one is not a direct copy or true recreation of Tim's, more my own interpretation of a style that I absolutely LOVE! I made few small changes here and there, which I'm sure will change and evolve as time passes. I'm definitely looking forward to making more of these down the road...Good Times:D

I don't post the prices for our Mini-Show Knives here on Blade Forums however information can be found on the CKCA Forum.
I would like to Thank All our participating knifemakers for their really creating VERY Special knives for our event.

Am I seeing things?? One folder, and it's a Hanson? :p :D

Well, I held it today, and it is worth buying a ticket just to see. Plus, you'll get a meal.

Superb work, Don.

This is an All-Star line-up if I've ever seen one. Should be an action packed evening.

Thanks to all that put this event together!

Enjoyed the visit, Joe! Thanks...

I'll say this now....am a bit disappointed. Would have liked to see more folders, and NOT bowies. I'm sure that everything will sell, but I'm not very excited to see the knives at the show....except for a couple from a technical standpoint.

Gonna be a great banquet, good times had by all...no doubt....just not seeing a lot of new ground being broken and this is going to be a "rubber meets the road" next twelve months.....makers gotta think WAY outside the box to remain relevant.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Sorry, STeven. Me not know how to make folder...look forward to seeing you, buddy. I think you're right though. The 'traditional' ABS style isn't making the order list for me right now. I've been wracking my brain for new ideas for the next year. I think that few makers can afford to sit still in this market...hold still, get hammered. That's how it usually works for ducks and deer anyway.

Steven, sorry you are disappointed.
As you know, our goal for our Mini-Show offering is to have a group of knives that most represents what our membership desires in the price ranges that they can afford. This should result in all knives being sold which is usually the case.
I believe we have done a fairly good job in accomplishing this over our past 5 shows.

I always try to insure we have at least (1) folder, (1) stock removal piece and couple Hunters and several Bowies/Fighters in the $450-$5000 price range, however this is not easy to accomplish.

We have had folders each year and have usually had a stock removal piece, however we don't have as many stock removal makers as compared to forgers, even though we are always trying to recruit more.

Even though the CKCA focuses on the collecting, appreciation, perseveration and promotion of ALL Custom Knives our membership is tilted towards forged fixed-blades from both collector and knife maker prospectives, so naturally our show offering will tend to be as well. We do strive to please as many of our members as possible.

Oh, heck, brother....I know, and you do a great job, you know that!

It's just that I have had the opportunity for the last two years to follow industry trends with hard numbers, and the vast majority of the offerings that I have seen here are representative of a market that is going WAY down with respect to moving on the aftermarket and holding initial values....I don't want to see anyone in that boat.

Will be at the banquet if anyone has questions or wants to talk about why I wrote this....I'd rather have a "rainbow and unicorn" perspective....but I can't.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

STeven, Kyle is bringing you something that is Not a Bowie! :D

I have noticed a slight slow down in bowies, but not fighters. Folders are still Hot!

Great line-up, IMO, especially given the limitations of the venue. One of the best I can remember. And if they all sell, as I think they will, then it seems to me to be pretty hard to call that anything but a big success.

Sure it would be nice to have some high custom tacticals and other folders, but I think that is probably not realistic for this venue.

Maybe I am wrong, but it doesn't seem to me like John White, Mike Quesenberry, Don Hanson, etc. are having a great deal of trouble selling knives, and just try getting a bowie or fighter from Kyle Royer and see how long you're waiting. I am thinking that the reports of the death of fixed blade forged knives have been greatly exaggerated.

Well said and I agree, especially with your last statement.

I know what Steven means regarding the market. I am having trouble selling PRE OWNED knives from some of these makers. The makers them selves seem to sell the knives with the flick of a thumb. Its the aftermarket thats at stake if you ask me. And obviously the NON ABS folders are taking off and ABS is a bit slower, although I still prefer them.
