The good news is that I did not get a tie for Father’s Day. The really good news unfolds below. But a bit of background is in order.

ABS Master Smith C. Robbin Hudson doesn’t seem to be making many knives these days. And more’s the pity for those who, like me, have long admired his uniquely elegant style – with octagonal faceted handles, curved plunges and fast, flowing lines. An example below (photo by Murray White):

Dan Farr is definitely a fan of Hudson, and still has one Rob’s signature blades in his own collection. But what provides the opening chapter to this story is that, a number of years ago, Dan had the opportunity to take a Damascus course through the ABS where none other than C. Robbin Hudson was the instructor. The blade that Dan completed at the conclusion of that course was a crisp, lean, and very true rendering of the Hudson style.

I have been known to make a pest of myself in Dan’s shop from time to time – and years ago stumbled across that beautiful completed blade. Naturally, I began pestering Dan to complete it. I did rather a lot of pestering. I got pretty much nowhere. Picking up the carbon steel Hudson knife in Dan’s collection, and holding it up beside the Damascus blade that Dan forged, it didn’t take a vaulting leap of the imagination to see the completed knife in my mind’s eye.

Fast forward to the days leading up to Blade and I knew that something was afoot. My 8 year old daughter (a big Farr fan herself, and a REALLY big fan of his dogs) is asking if she can send Dan an e-mail on my computer – and inquiring if I would kindly vacate the general area while she typed it. Next thing my wife is asking for Dan’s number. I’m not sure exactly what’s up, but I figure it had to be good.

It was.

On Sunday morning, my daughter presented me with a package from Dan – containing this:

Pretty much exactly what I had envisioned on so many visit’s to Dan’s shop.

The blade measures about 8 ¾”, with an overall length of 13 ½”. The nickel silver guard, butt cap and faceted Blackwood handle are executed in the signature Hudson style. I would love to show you professional shots to do the knife justice, but I just couldn’t wait.

The guard is engraved with my name on one side and my daughter’s on the other.

Well, I have rarely been more tickled with a knife, for reasons that should be obvious, and I am very grateful to all involved. I have thanked wife and daughter quite profusely, but I would also like to thank Dan for making this happen.

Here's a good look at the nicely detailed butt cap:

And this pic taken outside shows the shimmer in the damascus a bit better:

Thanks for reading

VERY cool Roger. What I read is you are lucky to have such a thoughtful wife and daughter...AND such a nice knife for fathers day!

Congrats!

That's an awesome looking knife. I've been an admirer of Rob Hudson's knives also.

Peter

Hi Roger,

You know I'm a Robbin Hudson appreciator. What a great representation. Dan: You nailed it!

More than that is the Father's Day significance. I can't imagine any knife in your stash with more value at this point. :D

Well done!

Coop

Great looking and a very accurate rendition of one of Robins knives.

A very special knife...can I adopt your daughter!

Roger, that is nothing less than absolutely wonderful. All of it.

Roger you are a very lucky man to have a wonderful wife and daughter like that. Also to have a very good friend in Dan. Beautiful piece. I have always admired Robbin Hudsons knives and that one really fits the bill. Congratulations to you and Dan.

1. GREAT knife.

2. What a family!

3. It is stories like these that illustrate what a unique and special community we have. Can't even begin to tell you how many fellow collectors and makers have done great things for me over the years, and how I have tried to reciprocate.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

A truly memorable Father's Day. Congratulations on a beautiful family and a great knife to memorialize the occasion.

I go nuts trying to find the story of any knife I own and often find a good one. But here, we have the reason I try to find such stories. They are, first, compelling. Next, they obviously involve super knives.

But finally, they involve people. And that's what makes the knife community what it is.

Great, all the way around, Roger! You're a lucky man to be able to tell such a great Father's Day story - because of family and community.

Best,

Bob

Great knife and great story.
Thanks for sharing it with the community.

Family is what it's all about. I know you must be so excited and proud
but probably no more than her. :)

The knife is absolutely wonderful and the story is beyond incredible. Roger and I have been having a couple great days viewing knives and exchanging stories and doing a trade. I hope to be able to view his Farr Hudson in the future too. Congrats Roger and to Emily for a great idea for Daddy's Day.

Roger,

It can't be said enough how special that gift is, and the workmanship on that beautiful design is incredible.

Roger,

Congratulations.

That's a great story and a really nice knife.

I don't know if you are aware of it, but Rob Hudson is scheduled to be a demonstrator at the ABS Hammer-in in Auburn, Maine July 23-25, 2010.

Roger that is fantastic and truly a wonderful story about a truly special family

happy Fathers day

My kids made me take them to a water park :D

What really caught my attention was the sheath in the first picture. Outstanding work - and the knives aren't too shabby either!
