Clearance sales helping my buying decisions.

I am so cheap (with regard to folders) that not only have I only bought (if memory serves) three in the last two years, but one was a Buck Toothpick (barely $25 CAD), and two were Spyderco Resiliences in 8Cr13MoV which regular price was about $90 CAD, but I waited until they were on sale for $68. And even then, one was to replace an S35VN Resilience I had been carrying for a couple years, and the other was to sell to a gentleman who wanted to try a Resilience with my mods.

I heard stepping on those keeps the chiropractor in business.

I think it's a myth.
Hate to disappoint but at this moment I don't even own one, had a few swiss army knives but cut them loose, it's a long sad story

That is zero. Anything over zero is not zero, and can be divided into more not zero numbers, hence my statement that I believe "near zero" is a myth. I should have been more clear. But I am sorry to hear you are walking around without a knife S ShaiHulud . Wait, are you really walking around without a knife?!?

I am new and in a similar position, outside of the holiday sales though I find the actual discount level on mfr site the rest of the year to be less than stellar. I will sometimes find a good deal on one of the online dealers and after comparing multiple dealers to confirm it is actually an exceptional price then research the knife itself to come to a better appreciation for it.

Edit: I seem to find discontinued deals more than promoted clearance sales, which we may not know about unless we look for them.
I probably should have clarified. When I wrote "clearance", I used the word as a generic term for deeply discounted from normal price.

Sites use all kinds of terms for categorizing their discounted items.

Ah --- why yes, yes I am
🙃
When I didn’t have a knife. I carried a popsicle stick. This was in kindergarten, and yes I got in trouble for doing it.

I tell this story because since then I have always carried a knife. Sometimes it was just a Jiffy box cutter. Or a key chain multi tool.

If I absolutely could not carry a knife. I would have the closest possible, option screw driver, sharpened credit card stout pen all the way back down to a popsicle stick if I had to.

Right, and for me aside from Black Friday and such the good deals have been found by a search where it's kind of forgotten. Maybe they have been discontinued and it is just not a popular model or otherwise in that sweet spot where there's enough stock for them to discount, but not so rare that it is more expensive because the availability has become so low.

Is that by choice so as to get your MacGyver on or something? I suppose many of us may not know other knife enthusiasts in person but if we did I'd imagine another will very likely part with a simple blade so you're at least equipped. If you have just one it could be a discipline in itself, unless one looks at it like abstinence..

I had low expectations for that steel when it rolled out and it still somehow disappointed me.

I expected it to get sharp, cut things for a hard day or moderate week, not rust, not break, and then get back to sharp, easily, and repeatably. I have not been disappointed, in my decade plus of using knives in this steel. Only more impressed as time has gone on and I have learned to regrind the geometry to suit my preferences. Don't tell Chronovore about this conversation because he'll give my post his compulsory 🤣 at any positive feedback for 8Cr13MoV. ;)

In another example from the other side of the equation, I've never been able to pull the trigger on a Bastinelli. I understand that the last one here is larger but almost $400 for 12C27? A hand sickle in N690 for $525? This little D2 knife for almost a grand?!? 😮

Well stranger things have happened, and now you can watch that on Netflix 😉

Not entirely by choice.

8cr13mov is definitely not 7cr, so it's good in my book, plus kershaw does a good job at it

I used all kinds of super steels, magna cut included, I'm both overwhelmed and underwhelmed. A knife needs to cut and not die in the process, I'm not trying to carve ebony wood or process giant game, for my needs, well done 8cr13mov is great

I process a lot of game, I cut a lot of things every day. 8cr13mov requires more sharpening than I'm willing to invest time in. I threw all all my cheap Chinese knives in my cars and leave them there in the event that I forget a knife or need a disposable knife.

Guess that makes me a throw-away hoe, leave me in the shed 👌🤷

Curious, what $ amount puts knives in your cheap category ?
