Clearance sales helping my buying decisions.

Curious, what $ amount puts knives in your cheap category ?
At the rate the price hikes are going, budget knives will reach 100 before 5 years time.
Maybe companies will do away with their budget lines altogether when they see the amount of money they pull in with collector tier knives

The average person doesn't carry around a knife. The average person that carries a knife doesn't carry a collector tier knife. There's a reason why companies like KAI produce so many cheap Kershaw knives.

I'd consider anything under $50 to be a cheap throwaway. But I only have about 4 knives that are in that category.
I also consider under $50 to be cheap.

But, I did just order a Kizer Mini Roach on sale for $45 on the Kizer site. Looks pretty good at that price. Knifecenter selling them for $75.

Well, it seems the plan to take over yet another industry seems to be going according to plan.

You got me looking at the Kizer clearance now, I think I may have to pull the trigger on the Kobold 2.0 with 4V (new steel for me) for $60 - using the points for free shipping though not always going to spend $99+!

Earlier in the clearance event, I broke down and ordered the discontinued Kizer Microlith at a very friendly price. Now I'm very happy that I did. I still have to put it through New Knife Orientation but you'll see it in the EDC thread soon enough. :)

That Kobold looks good.

I have a WE Black Void Opus. Titanium with carbon fiber, $127 on the WE site. It is a very nice small front flipper, but I can only open comfortably with the index finger reach around.

Black Void Opus

Was thinking a larger knife with a longer & wider handle like the Kobold would be easier to open with my thumb.

The Feist XL is one of my favorite front-flippers. It's very easy to do with lots of methods. Unfortunately, it isn't on super sale.

The Kizer Agressor is down around $55. While not a crazy deal, it is a decent discount. It's an interesting knife. The front-flipping tab is smaller but good. It has a larger hand-filling handle relative to the blade size but that works for me. The handles are also specifically contoured to accommodate pinch grip, which is a rare feature. My only issue is that the outer scale edges were a little crisp on mine so I did go around and soften them a little. (Of course, I have namby-pamby office hands that are extra-sensitive to ergonomic issues so I do little mods like that to lots of knives.) Here is a pic of mine.

WE is still too rich for my blood right now but I did get the Lundquist OSS dagger for a little over $40 around the holidays, just to have 20CV. I'm going to be trading some services for a Piranha with S30V and a Microtech though, I guess it pays to know the specs enough to recognize those opportunities even when you're on a budget.

I only buy at estate/yard sales or pawn shops. Even at estate/yard sales I usually wait until the last day to get the biggest discount. I’m not in the same league as you guys. LOL!

The brands I like never have sales, just brief times when they are not out of stock. So, I guess they go for sale, on occasion?

Even on the Exchange at this forum? I imagine you may have to watch like a hawk..

The friend I'm trading with might also have a Benchmade he's willing to part with, it's certainly also rare and it's only after knowing him for years that I found out he's got a collection and that we might be able to do a trade.

Heck some people might not even know what it's worth if they inherited it or something.

I'd like to do that, but I realize aside from pricing and knowing the value is being able to service the knife. While I might be fine taking it apart and cleaning it I feel the one missing piece is sharpening skills. Maybe I just need to put in the time and have more patience or invest in a decent sharpening system but I imagine it would actually be far more satisfying to restore a neglected piece. If there was a hands on sharpening workshop I would certainly be up for that, though maybe it's time to look at reviews of systems that lets me do a decent job sharpening without rock steady hands..
