Cleaver project

A thrift store here has a small Tramontina cleaver. That would make a neat little chopper.

Sorry for the delay folks. I've been away from the computer pretty much all weekend.

As for the tools, I used a Dremel tool with cut-off wheels to cut the shape. Afterwards, all grinding was done on a Craftsman 4"X36" bench sander. They're not the best tools for the job and definately not the fastest but they work.

I need to get my air compressor back from my mothers house so I can get the diegrinder/cut-off wheel back in use.

I'll uptate this post after I get a little more work done on the smaller of the two. I did some cutting early today but still have a ways to go.

I didn't know how great the progress was going! Rupestris is doing this for me, I just got the email to this thread. WOW! I'm very impressed and VERY grateful! I hope you like smoked salmon, next time I'm in town I'm going to be sending you some!

I dont know how practical it is, but I like it. I also have an an Old Hickory cleaver that Id like to do that too.
Practcial, schmactical! I love it!

Actually, with the weight and the belly on this thing it's going to be great at peeling the blubber and flesh off of a whale. (Did I mention that I'm half Eskimo?) It's goign to be a great Alaskan hard-use knife.

How could a former butcher not love a reworked cleaver. I agree that it is a practical large fleshing/skinner and last time I used one cleaver's chop (cleave) pretty well!!

Alaskanativeson: If your ever in Vancouver, send me a pm beforehand. Hard to find likeminded people in the city, I can and smoke salmon (learning) and make my own beer........
What a cool project, garage sale shopping I go!

Update.
I've got the smaller of the two almost finished up. I've got a little more work to do on both to just clean up the sand scratch and they'll be ready to ship off to Alaska.

Both have a mirror like convex grind with no secondary bevel. That's a Vic Farmer in the pics for scale.

Thanks again for the comments and for looking,

Cool mod! I might have to try that.

I found a 10-15 year old cleaver in my backyard yesterday that was all rusty with really bad edge damage. I spent some time restoring it.

Hey Chris,

Great job. I especially like the smaller of the two.

MRpink, you did a nice job restoring that cleaver. I think I would keep it the way it is and look for another junker to modify.
