Cleavers anybody?

Langbein.jpg

Here is a group of custom hunting knives from Langbein out of Colorado. The one on the left is 6" x 2" x 1/4" thick that is for quartering elk, or other large game. Never tried it on wood.

HT - That's a sweet looking blade. I really like the one second from the right.

That one is his skinner model. All these knives are D2 which does not seem to have many fans around here.

Agreed. I like the slightly upswept blade. Very nice.
As for D2, I've played with some Dozier knives in D2 and wouldn't turn my nose up at it. I've just never owned a knife in D2. It is a tough steel. I'm not a steel snob as much as a steel slut. Its all good. :p so many steels - so little funds.

EDIT: on second look, I don't think I've ever seen D2 with a mirror polish. Almost didn't think it was possible. Again, very nice.

You remind me that I have to get Big Freddie outside so I can see how nicely he plays with the other knives and axes.

I'm with ya there, and I just may use that quote in future :D

On the cleavers, I agree there's some cool ones shown here. But aren't they a little cumbersome to carry, being so wide? Now obviously, I realize the one Sharp Eye posted above isn't meant to be carried on the belt.

(someone's gotta throw a wrench in the love-fest ;) )

Good looking cleaver. I think the monster nessie is awesome. I bet it works well in the kitchen too. Good to see ya posting again!

Here's a sort of mini-cleaver, an Indonesian golok petok:

I've been using it in the kitchen almost exclusively of late. It's quite a blade for something rather inexpensive... tonight I was admiring the "hamon" that emerged slowly with use over the past month or so.

I have a 9" butchers cleaver for camp use, mostly for cleaving large catfish. it is a bit heavy to lug around the woods, and not suited to delicate work.

This one is 25 inches OAL, 5/16-inch 5160, convex edge, with a 2 handed grip.

and, some smaller examples:

I have made this thing out of butcher cleaver cca 18 years ago (reshaping blade, new handle). Sometimes it goes with me in woods and is quite useful.

Had seen you post this one before. Liked it then and now, nice sheath. I have a few cleavers and wondered how they would do as a camp chopper. Can't have too many sharpie things about. Would be nice to see more knife designs made from cleavers. Nice thick high carbon blades. Dig a hole, split some wood, chop a finger off, when mourning of course..

Mineral Mountain offered what they called a camp cleaver. I can't help but think it must be one of the more useful patterns you can carry to the woods. Don't know why we don't hear more about it, except they can be pretty heavy to carry if you're walking.

Samek,

I like that blade! Someone needs to sell those;)...

I think some of the comments about the weight/size of the really big cleavers for carry are legit.. But I find that what makes a knife uncomfortable to wear is length more than width, and many cleavers aren't that long.. I'm guessing that the person who made my rig had comfort in mind, the knife weighs 16 oz. and the sheath weighs about 5 oz. (trade off is that it probably won't chop like Big Freddie, but what would:D?). It has a very wide belt loop and is pretty comfortable to wear. I got home too late to take it out cut wood, but I did wear it around the house, and it felt fine.

Can I play too ;)

I've got a Koster Monster Nessie, green micarta handles with red liners. It rulled the roost for quite a while till this puppy can along and knocked it into next week (no offense intended to Dan at all).

It's the Lamey War Cleaver :D The only "blade" I own that everyone and I mean every one goes WOW

Can hardly wait to clear the brush out of my back yard in the spring!
