Clich's BKT wood handle mods

I used to use a dremel with a cut off wheel to get it started but that left to much room for depth errors so now i just use a jewelers file. The decorative jimping on my buddys was done with a round file and a rectangular one, and the 11 was done with just a round file. If you use a dremel it goe s a little faster since you dont have to go super slow in the beginning to make the initial groove. I did the front 3 in about 30 minutes id say. They arent overly deep, just enough for some extra grip when it has to go inside a whitetail.

here is my set of files

oh and i forgot to post the patina, thi is REALLY COOL. Its kinda like a ghost patina, what i did was polish the blade up to 3000grit sandpaper (but not for hours more like 45 minutes to get through all the grits) until a somwhat mirror polish but still kinda "dingy" i gues is the best word for it. Then put mustard on in your pattern, then wash off and rub with paper towel, then buff ALOT with steel wool. it makes the patina disappear and reappear with light movement, since the blade is so shiny the patina just fades away. really cool stuff. you can see almost no patina in the above pics but look here at only a slightly different angle

and a slighty different angle again and it goes dark. strange stuff

dude, sorry to ask but what is the size ( diameter) of the pins for the BK2 that you used.....and for that did you had to mod the actual pin holes on the knife,? or just the knife

After 3 more coats of poly. Also man the color or the sheath couldn't be more perfect

Great job Clich! I too am working with minimal tools, in the spare bedroom of my apartment. God do I miss having a workshop with bandsaw, drill press, bench grinder etc. Even a damn bench vise would be a huge improvement, but never the less, I'm able to achieve results through improvisation and adaptation that I didn't think I would be able to. I'm currently polishing my 7 to mirror finish (even if it'll be ruined the first time I put it through a log). Also made some handle liners, and am planning out some filework... And etching. I think before I get into the etching, I'll pick up a CS Hawk or two and practice with that before I take a chance on my 7. Thanks for posting all the great pics, and providing so much info. Those of us without a "Back 40" or even a back yard have a tougher time when it comes to this kind of knife-culture and modding, but with some determination and clever thinking, we can achieve the same results.

Yeh i finally got a proper bench and vice for an early bday present from my wife, so i see epic things in my future :D It can be tough to do without those things but every mod until now has been done completely free hand.

as far as the etching goes are you planning on the blue bleach antique etching or using actual etchant?

Actual etchant to do some minor scrollwork vine stuff on the upper flat portion of the blade. Might just get it engraved, and then patina it to darken it up, but I'm not sure. I'll practice on the tomahawks and see what kind of detail I can achieve. It's like as soon as I start one mod, I've thought of another one.
