Clip inside / handle outside pocket carry ? What do you think?

Just imagine how these same people put on a rubber 😦

My method is to tear open the wrapper, make the motions like I'm putting it on, toss it across the room without her noticing, then afterwards act like I don't know what happened šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Am I doing it wrong? because this way feels WAY better than how they taught me in health class 🤪

4. Quick/handy place to clip out while you're using it.
I have seen a few farmers do this, but only as a way to keep the knife handy while they are working on something and using it.
Yeah , I can relate to maybe just doing this as a temporary way to hold the knife while performing some repetitive chore .

Sometimes working in awkward positions , on ladders , under vehicles , in tight spaces , I've carried tape measures and other tools/ knives any way that worked for the particular situation .

I still wouldn't use this method for normal carry .

Fashion statement ? Who knows, I’ve seen all kinds of improper use of tools and other things.

Where I work we are required to take training and be certified in safety OSHA, state and federal compliance, operational procedures, health and environment and personal well being , among other official company procedures.
Occasionally we have contractors that come into our facilities and on locations and they are required to be qualified and have all necessary PPEs , safety gear and personal gas detection meter, training and certification to do the work. We are also to wear long sleeve shirts and 100% cotton outer wear at all times with exception to the break room and office areas, safety glasses, steel toed boots or shoes, and ear protection. That’s all pretty much standard in any industrial setting.
I don’t know how many times I’ve seen some of their crew wearing their hard hat backwards, or without the suspension system in it that is critical to its design, or wearing another cap underneath the hard hat. Many times they will have their sleeves rolled up or take their shirt off to just a tee shirt. Safety glasses on top of their hat or in pocket while working , and other safety related offenses along with improper use of tools and equipment.
Repeated offenses and they are dismissed and escorted from the job site and if their supervisor or other crew members are not adhering to the requirements they are all dismissed. They know all of this before hand but there are some who just don’t get it or they are just plain resistant to anything they don’t like. Sorry for the rant . Lol

I guess one of four reasons;
1. 'Look at me and my knife' statement.
2. Pants too tight/pockets too full, so hang it outside.
3. Left handed user (both celebs had theirs on their left side)
4. Quick/handy place to clip out while you're using it.
What about open carry?
Legal reasons? Idk....?

In crazy Cali.....could in the pocket be considered concealed? :/

Not for me. Too showy. And I'd be concerned about loss.

But it appears to be Steven Tyler's (Aerosmith) preferred method. I've seen him carry folders clipped "outside" in several pics. He's a big knife enthusiast.

Maybe it's a "rock star" thing.

Man, that's an old Benchmade Pardue automatic that dude is packing (I still have one). And the titanium handled Buck 100. I did that to one years ago. Put a pocket clip on it, sold it to a friend that used to use the clip to hang it off his belt.

Indeed!

The only thing worse would be Stephen Tyler with an M-Tech on his pocket!!!
He's a well known knife collector, especially autos, Microtechs in particular. I remember seeing pictures of him with a Dalton auto shaped like a cross (forget the model name) around his neck. He wouldn't be caught dead with a M-Tech.

Where does he live?
(Just the State: I'm not a stalker...)

I'm all for celebrity knife knuts , so long as their behavior with knives is responsible .

Many fans are heavily influenced by famous people , for good or ill .

I now see a reference to him being in California
Don't they have a 2" maximum limit on blades out there for automatics?

California STATE law-

No size limit on manual folders carried openly or concealed. Carrying a concealed folder with the blade open is illegal.

No size limit on fixed-blades carried openly. Any size of concealed fixed-blade is illegal.

Switchblades/butterfly knives must have blades under 2" to be legal to carry. Any size switchblade/butterfly knife is legal to own and keep at home.

There are a few restrictions on where knives can be carried and how big the blades can be at certain locations (schools, airports, etc).

But there are a few counties/cities that have more restrictive blade length limits.

For example- in Los Angeles county and city, it is illegal to OPENLY carry any knife with a blade 3" or longer. And a visible pocket clip or belt sheath is considered OPEN carry. It is however legal in LA to carry any size of manual folder CONCEALED. Odd but true.

But there are exceptions in LA to the OPEN carry blade length limit, like carrying for work or recreational activities, etc.

51 year resident of California here. Our knife laws aren't that bad, but they could be a lot better.

They never heard of mounting the pocket clip on the "dark" side?

When I worked construction in Dallas, that’s how 90% of the other construction workers carried their pocket knives. It makes no sense to me, if you have ever worked in any kind of space where there are ā€œsnaggableā€ objects, then you must have experienced something being pulled from your tool belt. I know I used to drop my tape measure about 100 times a day because it would hang on to a stud and rip out of my tool pouch as I walked by. I could only imagine a knife would be much worse.

Maybe it’s just my spacial awareness is lacking and I get too close to other thingsšŸ˜Ž

I'm ambidextrous and carry on my right side, though I do mostly write with my left hand.
No reason to carry out of the pocket as a lefty, Unless of course (see below):

I think it makes no sense. Other than for looks.
Agreed, makes no sense to me other than that.

I'd be concerned as that is a great way to have a nice folder taken right off your hip from a pickpocket, not to mention rounding a tight corner only to have it come undone to fall off and get damaged or left behind.

I would be afraid the detent would not hold and the blade would come out.

Then that detent would be too weak. I don't like knives that shake out easily.

The main issue here is that the clips on most folders are small relative to the body of the knife. Putting the mass of the knife outside of the pocket subjects it to more potential disruption than the clip is designed to withstand.

(Steve Martin) "I think it's brilliant. What an idea. And I was there. He took the idea. He saw it ripe on the tree, he plucked it, and he put it in his pocket. It's, it's, dare I say -- genius?
