Clip inside / handle outside pocket carry ? What do you think?

I don't get out much to the city . I'd seen pictures but never anyone in person carrying "handle out " .

In a Walmart , Nashville , across from 100 Oaks Mall . Couple days ago , my first sighting , in the wild .

Big guy , 20 to 30 yo , black T tucked into black pants . Bright shiny skeletonized stainless handle frame , maybe 5 to 6" , hanging out for all to see .

Kinda impossible to not notice .

It's no big deal , IMO , but sure looks very precarious . Great way to lose the knife .

And also a tad bit " in your face " type carry for my comfort , to use personally .

I also , somehow had the previous impression, just from pictures, that this might be more a thing for females with the tiny pockets , tight fitting pants ?

I carry "clip inside" during vacations at our cabin.

Reason beeing I mostly wear soccer shorts that have no pockes. And I prefer having the clip rub against my skin rather than the surface of a bi-directional FRN scale.

Thanks for the reply . :) Very interesting !

Kinda makes sense , for reasons of comfort .

What knife do you carry this way ? Maybe a small Spyderco with FRN handle ?

I have been a "small EDC knife guy" for years, but lately I've tried some larger folders.

The knife I had in mind in my post is the Pacific Salt 2, it's kinda big but also light weight due to the lack of steel liners:

Beautiful pic !

Yeah , I kinda thought it might be a Salt . :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

My closest relative to a Salt :

Very corrosion proof , enormous cutting power for it's size and weight . Orange SpyderHawk .

Today , just as an experiment , I decided to trial carry , clip inside style , using my most enormous folder .

To my great surprise , it actually worked very well .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

The secret to success is a well placed cargo pocket , nice thick/ heavy weight long T shirt , and very sturdy front pockets .

In the same cargo pocket , I carried a 2XAA sized , old Quark Tactical flashlight , 4 extended .22LR mags in a nylon pouch , and a small snake bite kit .

The unmodified Cold Steel XL Espada rode just fine and it was easy and comfortable to sit down , kneel , squat , walk and climb etc .

It also worked pretty well as a concealed carry . See above , top photo , only clip visible is on the flashlight .

But , this huge knife has a relatively small and narrow clip . Retention was not for anything athletic . The knife was easy to pull . OK for casual carry , only .

I believe that with some mods , e.g. a more substantial clip , this kind of carry might even have practical possibilities .

Before I got into knives I always thought the clip was meant for belt carry like a cellphone. Only later did it occur to me that it was a "pocket" clip one day on a whim when I decided to clip it in my pocket (clip outside). Until then I always carried it loose in the pocket. I never used it as a "belt" clip.

This was Buck Knives idea with the 186 back in 1986.
To be carried on your right side clipped to your belt.

Since when has there been a Walmart across from 100 Oaks Mall... anyhow I will say I have seen it on rare occasions but usually on workers who also have belt full of tools and often it seems to make some sense in their case as they usually have so much gear and keeping in a quick access spot.

Not for me. Too showy. And I'd be concerned about loss.

But it appears to be Steven Tyler's (Aerosmith) preferred method. I've seen him carry folders clipped "outside" in several pics. He's a big knife enthusiast.

Maybe it's a "rock star" thing.

Maybe OP saw Steven Tyler IIRC he lives in Nashville now

There are laws that state something along the lines of "cannot carry concealed on person", but a folding knife in full view is not in any way concealed. In MO there is a 4" concealed limit. I could carry a 6" folder on the outside, in the pocket it's considered concealed and could cause issues.

If I had run into him , with that rig ...at the Walmart ... o_O

Yeah , definitely a Twilight Zone vision (or maybe a bad hallucination reaction to the pain meds and heart drug cocktail I was on from Vanderbilt treatments ?) . 🤪
