Good morning guys.
I'm glad your back home safe Redbe.

I have a Kydex question, wanna make a sheath for my necker, nothing fancy but wanna do it my self.
I got all the stuff I need but wanted to ask you guys whats the perfect temperature for heating the Kydex (its 2mm thick) and, can I do it in my oven?

Good morning!

I think you have to buy an American oven with real degrees listed on it.
Those foreign temperatures just dont cut it. ;)

Actually,I used a heat gun to make a few "taco" style sheaths.
It worked good, just practice heating a small piece first,so you see
how long you need to hold on it before it starts to ripple and then melt.

You need a toaster oven.........you do not want to heat plastic in your wifes oven........thats a no no.

If your using .08 or .09 thick kydex put it on 300 degrees . let your oven warm up a little before you put the kydex in. Heat it on a cookie sheet, not on the oven rack. Textured side up, heat untill the edges start to roll up. You will have to monitor it closely , if not you will have a melted mess.

When its ready it will be too hot to handle for any length of time and will be very pliable , with no stiff center.

Work fast as it starts to cool fast. When you press it let it set for 5 minutes or so. You want the shiney side to bind together around your knife, but you want to get it out of the press while its still hot enough you straighten and tweak.

If you using .06 kydex back you oven down to 250 and really watch it close, it get hot fast and goes to a gooey mess if left in too long..........

I hope that helps-[arto
