Usually, that would be titanium nitride.

I use the stuff, but in optical coatings and not as tool coatings.

I imagine the successful coater would put lattice-matching coatings on the blade first, to improve adhesion. Then ... follow up with a nice, thick titanium nitride coating. But, I've been wrong before!

Somewhere, back in the safe, I've got an early example of a knife with a good titanium nitride coating. No spalling, no striping, no bubbles or pits.

he told me it needed to go through 10 bar vaccum heat treat, and have a good surface prep. NO PROBLEM
