OK, first my apologies to Steve -- a long time ago he sent me some maple to make some handles for my hawks and, as life sprang up with unexpected things, I didn't get around to it for a while.
Because Steve is one of the nicest guys in the world, I feel bad about not getting to it faster. So, brother, sorry.
But now, without further ado, a couple of Coal Creek hammer polls...
First up this is my hawk -- curly maple with a hand poured pewter band around the bottom..
I made it entirely via old school methods -- draw knife, scrapers, stained with aqua fortis and finished with boiled linseed oil. I even melted the pewter in my lead ladle for my muzzleloaders. So everything you see here could have been done in the 1700s.
By the way, I don't throw hawks, only use them for work. And even though she's pretty, this hawk will still keep heading into the mountains with me, as she should...
Now here is my son's hawk.. he does throw, so he wanted to keep the hickory handle and so I did some scorch work and tacks for him...
Here they are together, father and son so to speak...
And here's a nice curly maple family shot -- my Coal Creek Forge hammer poll hawk (a truly great hawk), my Bill Rooks Virginia Longrifle and my Matt Lesniewski belt knife, also amazing.
What I love about this particular family shot is this -- Steve, Matt and Bill are not just great craftsmen, but they're great human beings and so supporting their work with my dollars makes me feel good. We should always support artisans when we can.
And yes, all three are going hunting with me in the fall!
(Those of you with really sharp eyes will notice all the shots are sitting on braintan buckskin.... braintanning is another hobby...)
Sorry the photos aren't so great, I've always been a crappy photographer. But I hope you enjoy them.... If anyone wants some detail on the Coal Creek hawks, let me know and I'll give the pictures another go... By the way, there is a lot more figure in that handle than shows in these photos...
And Steve, once again my apologies for not getting it all done sooner... If yo knew the year I'm having....
