As we begin to approach winter, and the cold and wet weather arrive, like many folks, I tend to wear a bigger coat, and sometimes gloves. Cold hands can make small penknives harder to open, and accessing trouser pockets under a long coat can be difficult and inconvenient.

I often wear a big Ventile coat in the winter, and over the past few years, I’ve taken to keeping a larger knife in the pocket, something which I can open easily, even with cold, wet hands or gloves. I don’t know if anyone else does the same, but I know that many posters tend to favour larger folders as the mercury drops. Here are my current coat pocket knives, which I’ll alternate throughout the winter, changing and supplementing them as the fancy takes me. So what are your Coat Pocket Folders?

Grand and topical idea Jack.

Coat-time is the only time I do carry some bigger Traditionals as I hate having a weighty knife in the trousers, so winter gives an outing for the CASE Large Stockman in Amber Bone-centre. Important that these knives are either lockback, thus being easy to open or have decent pinch grip to the blade.

This Queen Woodsman gets out in the winter too, a heavy knife.

A recent recruit is the Shatt Swell Centre in stainless, again rather heavy so it's better off in a top-coat and 4" length qualifies it.

Seems like Queen have a monopoly on the Big Guns:D

But I like the Teardrop Jack in bone, this one gets use, its Ebony cousin is pampered indoors:cool:

Excellent topic, Jack. Made me think. What could I carry and easily open with my gloves on.

For deep winter outside work and heavy glove wear - a Case Sodbuster.

For hiking and general winter outdoors with lighter gloves - either a Case Granddaddy Barlow or a Remington Camp knife.

I would love to jump in on this topic, but darn, No worrying about winter here!! Same knives year 'round!

Jack, I tend to carry large folders in my RFP to begin with!

But of possible interest to people posting to this thread, Buck has just begun to offer drop point blades as an option on the 110 in the Buck custom shop. Yowza!!!!

Since I routinely carry knives up to 4" in my front pants pockets, a coat pocket knife for me has to be pretty large.

I usually wear a jacket rather than a coat, and I like my knives in my pants pockets so I can feel them, but you've given me an excuse to carry my Normark like yours in a jacket pocket, as long as the pocket has a zipper.

Great knives fellers, thanks for your thoughts and consideration on this one

Hey, that's interesting news Pete

In winter I will carry either a Buck 110 or a small (3.25") fixed blade. The fixed blade just goes into the coat pocket in its sheath.

I'll drop a larger slippie into my coat pocket when I'm out in the winter. A winter coat gives me room for more knives!
