Coat Pocket Folders

Great topic, Jack! I have a feeling that this 42 will see quite a bit of pocket time this winter!

It's not that often that I need to wear a coat, and the last time I wore a glove, I was still playing baseball. ;) :) In the winter months, I am much more likely to wear jeans though as opposed to shorts, and so take the opportunity to carry a fixed blade on occasion. Here's one of my favorites.

Great thread Jack :D I love my pinchable folders and the ones I've found work just fine with motorcycle gloves are my Opinel and 71 Bullnose.
The Opinel is always on me with whatever I'm carrying for the day and with both I'm not afraid to get them a bit wet or dirty.

Dude, What would a fella from San Diego know about heavy winter coats?

But I do wear leather gloves when thinning chaparral in the back. I find a Case full size sodbuster is easy to open without taking off my gloves. This one is in CV.

Since I routinely carry knives up to 4" in my front pants pockets, a coat pocket knife for me has to be pretty large.

I really like your choices, Jeff!!! Sweet!

I only wish I could wear a coat more often:mad: I have about 5 nice coats and love to wear them, about 5 times a year...lol. But when i do, it's Dos Equis...i mean a fixed blade or dos:D But..this thread is about folders...so....a big old English Jack or Granddaddy Barlow

For the most part if i have gloves ill probably carry a modern, but usually have both on me. There aren't too many of my traditionals that I can easily pinch open with gloves, but these two, no problem...

I rarely (verrrry rarely:D) have need of a heavy coat down here in SoTex but whenever I have occasion to wear my Barbour a large sodbuster rides in one of the outer snapped pockets.

Old pic...

Great thread and gives me some ideas. I have a Queen mountain man that has seen little use, so little that I have had ideas of giving it away. The same goes for my Lionsteel big Opera, allthough that one is on the borderline if it is a traditional because of the screw construction. Looks like these could be a great winter knives. Still I think my preferred winter coat knife would be a puukko, overall lenght around 7 inches like my little Tommi - puukko.

Here's the Lionsteel. Hopefully moderators don't mind.

I don't need to wear a coat or gloves here in winter. Get jealous fellas. :D
However when I'm wearing gloves I like to carry a fixed blade or an opinel 8 which I modded an easy open notch into.

I still appreciate the design of my one handed openers, but they are losing favor these days for an easily accessible slipjoint. I've found that sweet spot of a slipjoint with a 3" blade, as long as it's paired with my peanut. As far as I'm concerned, my remaining large slipjoints, like my Queen Dan Burke daddy barlow, my Camillus 9 barlow and my Queen Mountain Man are great knives, but too big. If I need to go that big, I have a small fixed blade on me. I carry my Gossman PSK Jr around my neck on a puukko/Skookum sheath, similar to the European/Canadian carry. I greatly prefer small fixed blades with a 3" blade, but with a handle that my giant paws can hold onto, although I put a lanyard on my PSK Jr.

One of Scott's buddies I met at his Gosstoberfest campout had a big Case folding hunter he bought at the PX while in the Navy, onboard at that. Everyone else was running around with Buck 110's. I really liked it, might get one when things kinda even out $ wise.

Thanks, Gev, and you're right about a granddaddy barlow, like this one in ATS-34 from S&M.

These work great with gloves.

Those Böker lockbacks are a very nice item, forgotten mine so thanks for reminding me. I have the Washboard Bone version, very keen edge you can get on them too.

Regards, Will

I pocket carry large heavy slip joints in my pants pockets. When I am wearing a heavier jacket, there may be a knife or two in the pockets.
But I have an illness. I will have 5 or so slip joints in my pants pockets. Including large multiblades. Two blade grandad barlows. Sunfish, GEC 23's, ...I can't seem to leave home with out too many!

This was in my suit pockets, and there were two more that did not make the photo.

I keep them in slip sheaths to keep them from banging about and marking each other up too much.

Still not winter here just a nice autumn. But when time has come to wear a heavy coat I'll take the same knives as always (Ohta, ancient TC, Beer Scout) plus a sheepfoot Ablett. And hopefully the 2015 forum's knife! And as usual, the bouledogue Issard and a sodbuster (most time the 070 Queen) in my shoulder bag. :D

Thanks Will! They are nice and pocket friendly. I should carry mine more as well.

Hope you can post a pic of yours!

Some great choices folks, and I'm glad that some of you are lucky enough to live in warmer climes! :)
