It was being sharpened on a EPA and when the tape was going to be replaced, guess what happened to the coating? Really displeased to say the least. And this is a LE Grip, with M4, and a LE number.

I always use blue painters tape for taping off the blade. Are you going to use the knife? If so, then there isn't much to be done with it. I'd call Benchmade and see what if anything can be done.

It wasn't going to be used. I emailed them, and they said I can buy a replacement blade for $35. I emailed them back asking if it would be in M4 with my LE number, or if it was going to be their plain jane 154cm blade. Haven't heard back yet.

Jst for curiosity's sake, why would you sharpen a collectible knife if it was not going to be used? When you do that, you significantly drop the value.

Because I'm OCD, and can't handle BM's infamous out of box dullness. And I wasn't going to sell it, so I really didn't care about the value perspective.

I agree with this. If it's a collectible for you, why mess with it?

The answer beat the question.
I feel BM corrected their less than stellar sharpness issue awhile back.
Every knife I've received in the last 15 months (which is a lot) have been arm shaving sharp.

I guess mine was sharpened by the noobie, or something, because it wouldn't cut printer paper out of box.

In past years BKC seemed to have a cross the board issue with their edges, and that's changed a lot, but things slip and the volume and pressure to get them out can cause out of box disappointment - BUT even if you were NOT using blue painter's tape as standard issue...Ben in his videos using the 'EPA' used nothing else; that's not right and should be a full warranty priority job - replacing the blade and a redo of the original serial number, gee thanks, is called for here. That's more of a coating flaw than anything you did yourself. Call them at 800-800-7427 and ask for Product Services, and let us know how it turns out...!

+2
My last few BM including the LE M4 grip have been very sharp OOB.

Let me get this straight: You aren't going to use it? If so, the sharpness of the blade is irrelevant, as it looks the same whether dull or sharp. I'm shocked that you got a dull one, as every other report I'm hearing on these things is that they shave hair out of the box and just keep cutting and cutting thanks to the higher HT on the M4. I also am puzzled why you don't care about the value. It sounds as if you don't mind having a devalued knife as a safe queen? I just don't get it, but hey, to each their own...

As for the finish: that is simply not supposed to happen. That is a manufacture or workmanship defect, as the Cerakote is supposed to stick to the blade unless it wasn't prepped properly. Don't email them. Call them, talk to warranty department and explain that the finish just flaked/peeled off the blade from having tape affixed to it (rubbed/scratched/etc. would be considered normal wear, but this is not). Ask for a warranty replacement and ask for a RMA tag. They should take care of you.

Tdb, you got excellent advice from folks here. Call Benchmade rather than email. It's always better to talk to a person about an issue rather than emailing and waiting. It seems to be ingrained into the younger generations that email and wait, then when nothing happens hard feelings develop. Calling gets you immediate access to a dynamic conversation where you can address the matter which is of highest importance to you. Also, I'm sure YMMV, but if a knife isn't going to be used it doen't matter how sharp it isn't. ;)

I just got 2 of these myself, and the other Benchmades I've gotten over the last 2 years have been crazy sharp. I did notice that one of the 2 Grips I received has a slight burr. It was removed by a quick stropping on a old leather belt with no compound.

+1 on this; calling is the fastest way - agreed on the crazy sharpness of late - and RD, what the problem with the connection to server where Blade lives? Sometimes it's fast as heck, other times I can't access it and I know my PC's not the problem!

I'm going to call them now. I'll update you guys when I get off the phone.

Ohh wait, it's Sunday. I guess tomorrow then.
