Anyone know of a lightweight super durable solution to brewing fresh coffee on the trail? Something I can put directly into a fire...maybe a well made french press or some other tech I had not considered.

Try Starbucks Via. It's an instant but it's really good. They use micro grounds or some such thing. Comes in those crystal lite looking water bottle pouches.

While I think that might serve as a back up, I have a local roaster here in town that has me hooked...I need something that I can brew real grounds with for when I fish and hike.

My wife and I really like the simple Folders Coffee Singles...maybe not what you're looking for, but they pack well and they taste 100X better than instant:D

I have the GSI press and have to give it a big :thumbdn: way to much coffee makes it past the press and it's just more mess then it's worth. I plan to buy that insert that goes under the cap of the SS guyot, you boil the water, put the insert in with coffee, and the lid and turn it upside down and let it do it's thing. Should work much better.

Here's some options:

Titainium French Press

I though somebody posted some sort of mesh ball that could have worked:confused:

Here's the GSI filter:

My wife has used the cup-mounted version...but you have to make sure it fits your cup:

If this is what you're talking about I don't think it will work. It's a tea infuser. Of course it will work if you like tea.:D

The GSI one Rock linked is the one I was referring to. I would assume you could also put that on top of an empty bottle with the grounds in it and pour from the pot\bottle used to boil through the filter into the empty bottle. That would probably give you a stronger brew also. Hope that made sense??

I use the MSR MugMate filter (available at REI and Campmor) even at home when I only want a single cup. I've used the same one for years and years.

GSI filter doesn't fit "perfect" and no matter which I tried on my Guyot SS bottle, it leaked a tiny amount. Not sold on that one here.

sew yourself a small muslin cloth bag, with a drawstring to close it. Fill it with ground coffee and boil water in your SS water bottle. drop in the muslin bag and let it sit a few minutes.

My father did this for years. Perfect strong coffee, no grounds floating around.

being a coffee conseur/snob, the only solution i have found for coffee on the trail is the Starbucks Via's.. they're nice and strong and don't require much...

doesn't coffee dehydrate you?

And?

Yeah I am gonna try them out, but I have a local roaster that makes a far superior product and I would love to take it on the trail...some great ideas so far...I especially like the low tech ones.
