Coffee onthe Trail

all right, here is low tech.

bring water to rolling boil in a billy can (use an old #10 coffee can and add wire bail). Throw in coarsely ground dark roast coffee and remove from fire. Let sit until its strong. Stir and let the ground settle. Pour off the top 3/4 of the coffee and toss the rest with the grounds.

just like the gold rush guys did it.

doesn't coffee dehydrate you?

No; not generally I should say as it really depends on the individual. There have been several studies. Yes, coffee is a diruetic and makes you want to pee, but the studies have shown a net loss almost equal to water. The one study by Lawrence E. Armstrong, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Connecticut disproves the notion that caffeinated beverages rob us of our precious fluids. But what I thought was more interesting is that for habitual coffee consumers, the finding that those with caffeine tolerance have reduced likelihood that a fluid electrolyte imbalance will occur. The more regular your caffeine habit, the more fluid your body is conditioned to retain.

Jeesh! That's so, so, so primative...almost "Bushman" like :p

I use a french press every time I make coffe and love the flavor it gives. When you use a french press, you cannot use regular ground coffee, it will pass through the filter. You have to grind it yourself (mot grocery stores have nice grinders) and set it on "very corse" or "french press". Never brew it for longer than 4 minutes (3 is best), if you want stronger coffee, use more grinds.

Having said that, I find the Folger's singles to be quite good and even enjoy some cowboy coffee (grinds + water) every now and again. I live on coffe in the morning, but like a lot of different styles.

sew yourself a small muslin cloth bag, with a drawstring to close it. Fill it with ground coffee and boil water in your SS water bottle. drop in the muslin bag and let it sit a few minutes.

My father did this for years. Perfect strong coffee, no grounds floating around.
I believe nessmuk did something similar with a simple bandana. Maybe give that a shot. You probably carry a bandana anyway.

I use the little coffee pods, that my wife buys for her Sensao coffee maker. they are about like the Folgers coffee singles. & its a lot better than instant.

Look in your local Latino market for a thing that looks like a small flannel wind sock.
Brew with the grounds in the pot.
Pour thru the sock/funnel.
No grounds in your cup and shake the sock out and rinse.

Sorry but I can't remember the Spanish name for it.
It works a treat though.

being a coffee conseur/snob, the only solution i have found for coffee on the trail is the Starbucks Via's.. they're nice and strong and don't require much...

Sorry brother, but going to have to disagree with you on this one. It's excellent instant, but on the low end by freshly ground standards. I grind Peet's and go the cowboy coffee route. Throw that crap in some boiling water, let it cook for a few minutes, turn off the heat and let the big lumps settle out, then drink like hell.

Turkish coffe is where its at.......heart stopping, then heart racing kick in the arse

You're not kidding! We had Turks set up bazaars in both Iraq and Afghanistan and holy bitter caffeine kicker Batman!!! You can honestly take the small (espresso sized) cup of Turkish coffee and add it to a gallon of hot water to make a typical stout pot of coffee!

I've used the H2JO filters for both coffee and tea. They work well.

It would be especially cool to couple one with a Guyot stainless Nalgene - put the stainless steel bottle in the fire, get your water boiling, remove it from the fire, add the filter, screw the cap on, and lay it on its side to brew. Doesn't get much easier than that.

GSI filter doesn't fit "perfect" and no matter which I tried on my Guyot SS bottle, it leaked a tiny amount. Not sold on that one here.

I've had that problem with the white polyethylene Nalgenes, but not the regular lexan / tritan bottles. Maybe try a rubber O-ring from another Nalgene cap with the GSI filter?

I've seen these at Publix on the isle with all the kitchen utensils.

I have been doing the same thing for years.
works great, no grounds in your cup.

oohh.. now your talking.. we loooove Peet's.... we have a few here in Santa Cruz and actually, we just got a fresh pound of beans today..:D

at home, we make coffee one cup at a time in a cone drip filter that goes over the cup... they work well for camping too..

when i have the time, i like to grind it up prior to heading on the trial.. i have found these that are really cool and work really well.. made by our favorite co. in GREEN..

Camp coffee

My wife and I really like the simple Folders Coffee Singles...maybe not what you're looking for, but they pack well and they taste 100X better than instant:D ROCK6

+1 on the singles. I've had them and they taste good. Like a tea bag but coffee. And sealed packet for freshness.

I like cowboy coffee. Just dont drink that last gulp!

Research "Coffee Socks"

but for years I used filters and the little plastic filter holder. Worked just fine. And is pretty light weight.

Just put the grounds in the container. Simmer until they drop to the bottom. No need for all that fancy filtering. I use a Hialute kettle or a 12cm zebra pot
