My daughter brought me some Starbucks VIA Italian Roast Extra Bold from work yesterday. I brewed it this morning using their directions, 8 oz and 1 packet. Wow, really too strong, with a bit of a bite and it had that mucilage flavor of instant as an undertone. I added another 6 oz of hot water and the taste smoothed out very nicely, the instant coffee flavor went away and I liked it quite a lot.

The numbers: I e-mailed Starbucks HQ and they tell me that 1 pack has 180 mg caffeine, which is about my total daily intake from a couple cups of weak drip brew (it does indeed feel like 180 mg of caffeine, I don't think I'll need another cup today). I put them on the scale, packet average is 5.4 grams each, so carrying 10 will cost you 2 oz. Daughter works at Starbucks, so I get them free, but retail is fairly steep at $10 for a 12 pack.

Try Starbucks Via. It's an instant but it's really good. They use micro grounds or some such thing. Comes in those crystal lite looking water bottle pouches.

really like these. they come in all sorta of sizes and prices. and yes i carry one backpacking most of the time.

We prepare our coffee at home with a stovetop percolator or "caffettiera" in Italian. We lived in Italy for four years and this is the best system...there's a science to achieving a perfect cafe. Instant Starbucks Via Extra Bold is incredibly delicious and efficient (allows you to use your cooking system), don't knock it until you try it...trust me!

I just did this review on the Brunton Flip and Drip, it may be what some are looking for, for a fast cup of coffee in camp. You can use any coffee and no disposable filter is needed

I've used those. That approach adds essentially no weight to your pack, assuming you already have a cup and some means of boiling water, and it works fine. :thumbup:
