Coffee

I had some Costa Rica Tarrazu way back when that was intoxicating! It was a close second to the Kenya Meru. I haven't found any like that in decades though. My father brought back a whole burlap sack of overroasted coffee from Costa Rica when he went down there for a vacation. What a shame!

That video I posted earlier of roasting in a cast iron pot was taken by my daughter while I was up in Arlington VA visiting her for the holidays. We went down to a neighborhood Ethiopian shop and got some "green" Yirgacheffe and played around with pan roasting it since that is how the Ethiopians roast it. I say "green" but it wasn't green at all, all light tan colored beans without even a hint of green. First try was too light (VERY earthy), Second was too dark, Third time was the charm (that was the one she videotaped). She took it to her coffee club and everyone loved it.

Not much in the way of quality control with that Yirgacheffe...all sizes of beans and some malformed beans and such. But once we got the roast right it was very good. Because of the variation in bean sizes it came out more like a blend with very complex flavor. And it didn't need time to rest, it was fully drinkable immediately after roasting.

Unroasted beans come in a range of colors. I've had some that were dark green to pale green up to the light tan color you described. I've wondered what causes that. Is it something that's dependent on the specific coffee plant, the conditions in which it is grown, or the processing method? Perhaps it's a combination of all those things.

I see a lot of old friends here in this thread - and wonder why I never posted here before!
I enjoy coffee, but not to the extent of buying an espresso maker.
Maggie and I have used a Bunn drip maker, and do at least grind our own beans.
Maggie despises "flavored" coffees, but I will enjoy them occasionally.
We love the old Jamaican Blue Mountain that you used to be able to get, but now most of that real JBM is sent to Japan and we get "blends" or coffee that is grown lower in elevation than the good old, smooth stuff you used to be able to buy. Disappointing, actually.

Most of the time we like Costco Columbian beans or sometimes they have a very good Kona.
I like medium roast, personally. We love the Gevalia medium roast.

I read the first 20 pages of this thread, and then the last 25 pages - and I have my settings such that this thread is 197 pages, so more posts per page. I have enjoyed this immensely, and will have to read some of the "middle" to figure out where @Barman1 @UffDa @Codger_64 and some of the other posters back in the early history of this thread have gone....
Monofletch Monofletch - love the Secret Santa coordination, and I will promise to be on the list for the next one.
I live 10 miles south of Coffee County, after all.....

Good to see you hop in, Andy! You coming down here for the knife show this weekend? Lots of places in the area to get coffee as well.;)

We usually do a 'Christmas in July' swap, too. Every once in a while somebody will randomly suggest a group swap or a couple people will just decide to do one on their own.

Hi Dan - I have moved to south-central Tennessee, so it would be up there for me now - and unfortunately, no, I am going to Owensboro KY to visit my father, and then back up to Peoria to visit my kids as I have not seen them since before Christmas for several reasons, not the least of which was our now three-month remodel of our new home.... I look forward to the Christmas in July swap - I am a Moon-child and that is my birth-month. :)

mqqn mqqn I hope you stick around. There are some good people here.

Indeed, and I will stick around for sure!

Ah, didn't realized you had moved. Can't say I blame you. I did remember you having come down for it in the past, but it was on Saturday while I was at work. Enjoy the time with your family.

Andy! mqqn mqqn :D Good to see you here! Hope you decide to stick around with us coffee geeks. ;)

Winchester? I occasionally work at AEDC, and work with a model vendor in Tullahoma sometimes too. I've spent many months of my life in the area doing wind tunnel tests, so know the area pretty well. Usually spend a good bit of my free time fishing the Duck River below Normandy Dam, and sometimes fish the Elk River below Tim's Ford. I'm friends with a couple retirees in the area that I met through a fly fishing forum too. Been to the area distilleries more times than I can recall as well, lol. Beautiful part of the country! Though a bit warmer and more humid than I prefer in the summer...

Have you guys ever seen a "monsooned" bean before? They're pale yellow in color, weigh a bit less than usual, and sound funny, almost hollow. They make a very interesting addition to an espresso blend...

Monofletch Monofletch I will go back to it just for you. I miss Luca too!
SpyderPhreak SpyderPhreak - that is too cool. I know about AEDC and how big the tunnels are there. If you get down here, that is about 15 miles from my house, and I have a couple of spare bedrooms / bathrooms - so get in touch! I don't make the best coffee, but I do make a mean filet mignon. You are welcome anytime.
dannyp dannyp - thank you my friend! I did enjoy those Gateway shows....and now the Illinois folks get to play with autos! Good stuff!

If you read the book, Luca was the only guy that the GF was "afraid" of - but Luca was totally ingratiated to the GF. Ralph Merlino, a member here, actually knew the actor that played Luca. He was a wrestler named Lenny Montana and was physically imposing at 6'6" and later worked as a bodyguard.

But, now...the fishes....

LMAO, calling Montana a "bodyguard" is like calling Al Capone a "leading citizen of Chicago." He was a frickin' enforcer and arsonist for the Colombo crime family. He did time on Riker's Island.

See, this is why we can't have nice things...

Kenya Meru was my all time favorite coffee back in the 1970s. But it is becoming a unicorn coffee.
This is why:

Kenya: Frustrated Meru Farmers Cut Down Coffee Trees Citing Poor Returns
Ms Jane Murithi, a farmer at Nkubu who supplies her produce to Kathera coffee factory said she had decided to clear her 300 bushes after she got Sh540.

She joins a growing number of several other farmers in Central and South Imenti who have decided to replace their coffee with avocado and macadamia trees citing years of frustration.

"I was paid Sh11,000 advance for 550 kilos and when all the other deductions were made I was left with Sh540. The advance was not even enough to buy fertilizer and meet my personal needs. With this kind of misery, I no longer need the crop in my farm. I would rather plant maize or Napier grass for my cows," she said in an interview at her farm.
