Coffee

So this was interesting... but not good. It was tart and a tad offensive, even with cream. My sense of smell still isn't totally recovered from COVID but the "strawberry, orange, peach, green apple" tasting notes were mostly present as the ghost of off flavors I sometimes get from those fruits.

I tried a different honey process coffee from Twin Engine that was a lot better.

I haven’t had a honey process yet, it’s on my short list tho. I’ve been told it’s a good mix between washed and natural process

I've only tried a couple of these. So far, this one is my least favorite. Getting through it is taking work but I'm not going to toss it.

I've had a few more cups since my initial post. It has all been by french press. I've messed around a little with the grind and the steep time. The "off flavor" I mentioned is present in the raw beans and is unavoidable. It is "off" relative to the suggested notes and I've come to place it on the bad end of vegetal. It's like getting the essence of green fruit, stem, or leaves in with some of those notes plus a little acrid funk.

The Twin Engine was much better but I only had one cup before it was gone. If this flavor note was present in the Twin Engine, it was much subtler and/or appropriately balanced such that I don't recall. I have a couple of other honey process coffees to try once I power through this one. I'll be sure to post about it when I get there.

Okay. This coffee was a lot better. It says washed or honey for the process, so I don't know what that means. It has a similar vegetal note but it is much less sharp, better balanced, and just better overall. I don't know that I would seek this out again on purpose but I don't hate it.

That vegetal and grassy taste is something I don’t like. Nothing is worse than astringency tho, for me

This is better than the other honey coffees I've tried so far. The brightness of the light roast blended into and tweaked the tang that had been unpleasant in the other red honey beans. It worked better with the vegetal note. It balanced well with cream. It was actually interesting to drink.

I also noticed the caffeine here, which is pretty rare in my regular daily consumption.

So this was another good one from Twin Engine. It's a darker roast and the vegetal character I've noticed in some of the other honey coffees is very mild here. Overall, these beans make for a rich, pleasant, and full-bodied french press with a slight something extra.

Most of mine will get broke down into portions, vacuum sealed, and in to the freezer. Rogue roasted the last of a limited natural Kenyan that is one of the best coffees I’ve had this year so I grabbed some more to stash before it’s gone until next year

If you see this at Costco it's a buy and IMO reasonably priced at $7/lb.

If you are wondering about the t-shirts, they advertise Finca Hamburgo, La Ruta del Cafe which is a little hotel with a restaurant and some cabins, about 10 miles from Zaragoza straight up in the mountains on a dirt road for 4WD only with a driver who knows cross country. No doubt this is where the Edelmanns get their mail, and from its name I'm guessing they are owners or part owners.
