Coffee!

I bought a cheap thingie that consists of a bunch of cone-shaped filters and a plastic spike that hangs the filter from the top of your chosen cup or mug. You put ground coffee in the filter, hang it in the top of your cup, pour boiling water through it, then leave it hanging in the water to seep for a while.

Cheap, easy, effective.

Here's a photo showing the thing I mentioned above. It's a little small, but it's all I have....

You could even leave the little plastic stick at home and use a twig, so all you'd be carrying are the little cone-shaped filters and your ground coffee.

I don't know if I could live without coffee on the trail. I'm a coffee addict and currently have five pound bags of beans from Sumatra, El Salvador and Yemen in the kitchen, as well as a few expresso blends for the Saeco machine on the counter top. Good coffee is enjoyable at home, but I don't think it could possibly be better than when it's enjoyed on a crisp morning, by the fire in the woods, just as it's getting light out.

When I was doing shore duty in the Navy, my roomate in the barracks was a Navy Corpsman from the Wisconsin woods. He made cowboy coffee every morning in the room using a tuna can filled with cotton wadding and alcohol for a stove, an old coffee can for a pot, and a paper towel to pour it through as a filter. It was as good as any I've had.... :)

Stay sharp,

Dude! In Seattle that could pass as normal, but in Texas that must be considered deviance!!! :D :D :D

Well, everyone loves my coffee. But like the story of the little red hen, they are too lazy or uninterested to roast themselves.

It actually isn't that hard once you get the hang of it. But you are right, to a man (and woman!) my amigos think I am some hard core coffee nut. I have to admit, I do love my coffee.

Hey... I quit smoking cigarettes. I hardly ever drink anymore. I only smoke two cigars month. Jeez... I need to have something to enjoy!

Yep, just dunk them a bit longer. You can't rely on color to let you know its done like you can with tea bags. That being said, I really recommend the Starbucks VIA over these.

You forgot to add "then strained thu a used diaper!" :barf: To their credit, they pack up small and will introduce caffine to the bloodstream.

After my recent spinal injury, I swore off diaper jokes.

I have this tiny metal thing that you put ground coffee ( I grind my own and carry it in a zip lock bag) in the middle, water in the bottom, screw it together then oput it on a direct flame, from a gas cooker, but maybe you could use an open flame, when it gets hot enough the water boils up through the ground coffee and real black coffee come out, only enough for a espresso but its agood pick me up.
That's called a moka express. Bialetti has made them in Italy for years, and they make excellent coffee, if you can handle the weight.

Wait, what happened to just putting the grounds in the water and drinking it?

When I'm car camping, I bring a percolator, but any other time I'll put up with drinking some grounds for a better cup of coffee.

+1 cowboy coffee... water, coffee grounds, canteen cup, fire... mix and enjoy... green tea as an alternative...

but if its is car camping i awlays bring my 12cup blue perk pot.... grins

This is survival.

I use a plastic thing that goes over a the cup and makes a single cum all you do is put in a filter and coffe grounds. very simple no pressing.

Last week I had to have a stress test and they told me no caffeine for 24 hours. When I finished the test the nurse ask me if I wanted a glass of water? I told her, hell no I need coffee.

Since a large part of taste is the scent we smell as we eat or drink...I often mix some French Roast, or Italian Roast (strong) ground in with the Maxwell or Folgers...I bring along. The sharpness carries over into the more generic coffees...and the scent alone, combined with wood smoke, and a pipe...is an essential part of the experience.

A regular filter with a twist tie works, if you don't want to wait for the grounds to settle, or if you don't want to pass up every last drop.

Get a little Vietnamese-style coffee press.

They're small, weigh almost nothing, and work just fine, if you like strong coffee one cup at a time. They're less than $5 at many Asian grocery stores. Then you can bring any dang foofoo brand of coffee you'd like, and not suffer the agonizing pangs of instant.

LOL... went "cityfied" camping over the weekend for a tradional archery shoot... two or three perks pots were always running... grins gotta love it
