Coffin handled Bowie - pro or cons?

Here is one the Bob F owns that shows the wasp waist and the big butt that caused the wedging action to really be amplified

Now some do not think these are the prettiest of coffin handles if compared to more ornate variants

But I can assure you they are working handles and perform as intended

Harder you swing the more they wedge in the hand

Blade indexing is very good possibly the best

:D

Yes sir they do provide a good "knob" to hold onto, wedging action as well.
I like the knob without a guard and a more forward grip with the guard.

Cool pix, thanks for playing along :D
That oval guard is suh-WEET!

Hello!

Allright now, Joe! Now you did it! I REALLY need to get one of those "ugly" Bagwells to experience the handling myself... ;) :)

Off, looking...

Best regards,
Alex

Guess I'll have to sort the pennies out again :P

Hello Joe!

Thank you for the additional images! The direct cmparison between stag and the coffins on those Bagwells helps me get a feeling for the properties of the coffin for sure!

Best regards,
Alex

Coffins the way Bagwell does them might not be the prettiest but they do perform well in the hand when it comes to indexing and using inertia to secure the grip

They are thin at the throat and have big butts so they wedge in the hand well when put in motion

Again maybe not the prettiest but certainly a very well designed handle for certain applications

The majority of the more attractive coffin handles I find to be beautiful but do not work as well in motion

Coffins certainly seem to of been very popular in days of old so they must have some good design elements to have been in such demand

For me the ones I'm attracted to looks wise often do not feel that great in the hand and the ones that feel good are rather ugly :)
Thanks for valid input (as usual). Good points about the handling properties of coffin handled Bowies.
I'd much rather go for a useful ugly knife than the opposite.
As for Bagwell knives: Im in awe of the Bagwell knives and fortunately, Ive never seen an ugly one from his hand, so a Bagwell coffin handle would suit me very nicely.
*Cough* coffin handle knife project next *cough*;)

Personally, I think, that they are very 'pretty.'
Quite the understatement IMO.
Ive no doubt, that they'd work extremely well.

Dont be sorry. Post more:D
I dont think, that I can recall you posting a knife, that I didnt like.

The stag handled knives are beautiful. I cant deceide, which one I like the best.

Further more, that 'massaged' coffin handle simply looks fantastic.

One of my favorite handles from Bill is his birds heads

Only the first knife is mine

All beautiful knives. That birds head Bowie is quite unusual - thats a good thing.

The coffin handle Bowie is fantastic. I expect nothing less from Bagwell.

I've always liked coffin handles on daggers. Here's one I own.. KT

Speaking of Bagwell; I just now stumbled over a coffin handle guardless Bowie, which spoke to me.

Its just like Id' envisioned a coffin handled guardless Bowie only better!:D

For obvious reasons, I cant link to the dealer but íts by Bagwell and is called 'Tah Chee Cherokee Chief Hunting Knife.'

Wow!

If I remember my Bowie history correctly, it refers to a great old painting of a chief holding a Bowie knife.

In the sales as for the knife, its stated, that it was a knife, that Bagwell intended for his own use.
I cant comment on that, apart from that if its true, mr. Bagwell and I share the same taste in these coffin handled guardless Bowie beauties.

Simply a fantastic knife though a vast departure from other beautiful Bagwell knives in this informative and great (IMO) thread.
