Coffin handled Bowie - pro or cons?

I would if I could and I tried, but its part of a slide show.

How ever with 'Bagwell' and the knife name in bold, you will get a hit on it.

First post.

Let me know what you think of it, please.

Not a great pic but a great knife

I like it very much

Took a few screen shots and cropped them. Didnt even think of it at first - I rarely have use for that function.

Here a few more pics n specs:

Tah Chee Cherokee Chief Hunting Knife

Originally intended by Bill for his own use. Cocobolo coffin handle, no guard, Satan's Lace Damascus, single-edged.

Blade length: 6 3/8 inches.

A fantastic looking knife.

I saw that hunting knife before and completely forgot about it. It's a little beauty. That's the sort of thing I'd like to get - a nice matching Hell's Belle and hunter.

Must admit, that Im very tempted to go for it or at least a similar one myself. An elegant knife and quite in tune with my quest for a compact unobtrusive coffin handled Bowie.

Unless one was/is a knife afficionado, one might not even know the knife for the fantastic craftmanship involved to make it, whould one encounter it in the field on the belt of another person.
I like that in a knife. Less is more.

Thanks to all for your most excellent POVs and insight/info in regards to a coffin handle Bowie.
Great pics and good points in regards to the pros and cons of of the coffin handle.
I now want a coffin handle Bowie more than ever (but that was to be predicted).
I enjoyed the heck out of this thread.

While you wait and make up your mind…
Get the kit blade, some handle slabs and pin material.

Doing the handle yourself gives on a real appreciation of what goes into a custom knife.
And that's just the handle :D

Great minds DO think alike:D - Im entertaining the idea of getting the kit and put on handle slabs.
Then I'd use the knife for a while and if its as nice to 'handle' as it looks (no pun intended), I could then tweak the design further to my taste and ask a knifemaker to make me a guardless coffin handle Bowie in the style of that Appalachian or Natchez, as I guess its called.
Ive always liked the coffin handle look, but never worked with one, so I appreciate the input above.

The Evans knife of yours is of course on a totally different level and with far far FAR superior craftmanship and I really like it.
But materials and workmanship aside, I must admit that the outline of the blade shape of the kit knife caught my attention with the wider blade with more belly.

Would be great to get a knifemaker to make one in that style. The other knives, I have had made are vastly different.

Go for it.
As I said, I've done two of them.
The first was cow bone with a thick, heavy handle.

The presentation box I made for it.

#2 has 1/8" micarta scales which I prefer.

Probably not as good for heavy cutting, where you'd have to bear down on the blade, but I don't get to carry, much less use a bowie all that often.
And... it is much lighter and has better balance.

I have a hobby drill press from sears and the rest was done with hand tools.
An 80 grit belt, cut open and stretched over a big file or piece of wood does wonders on bone and micarta.
Add a half round double cut file, a single cut mill bastard file and lots of sandpaper in finer and finer grits.

Good fun :)

I really like, what you've done with the knives.
Were I to get the knife kit, I'll go for handle slabs in a lighter hue like the ones you've chosen.
I kind of like the 'Fabricated Antique Ivory' and eight small pins instead of two big pins in keeping with the antique theme of the blade.
