Cold Steel, Benchmade, and Spyderco's Intellectual Property

Sal,

Out of curiosity, was there an agreement, royalties, or even communication with Gerber about thier EZ-Out knives?

Thanks, Chris

Hi Quiet bear,

Gerber was being run by Jim Wehrs at the time. (Now of Lone Wolf Knives). Jim and Doug (Hutchins) approached Spyderco, discussed licensing, signed a royalty agreement and paid Spyderco regularly until the patent expired. They selected the "bean shaped" hole to begin establishing their own identity with a hole shape. Once the patent expired, they continued using the same hole shape.

I was pretty easy to identify the EZ out in a movie with deNiro because of the shape of the opening hole in the folder.

There are many on this thread -- and many others -- whom I "know" on several different levels. Of the more intimates are the45guy, and Neil. Thom is quickly becoming a good friend as well. Sal I feel like I know through his excellent products and his many posts on the Forums here, and I would like to get to know Mr. Onion better, too (as his dedication to Forumites with Q&As and other such technical issues is truly outstanding), but alas, my wallet is in post-holiday recovery.... I'm also a Benchmade fan.

Everyone I've mentioned is someone I currently have a tremendous amount of respect for, and I have complete faith that whatever needs to be worked out with respect to this issue will be worked out in a gentlemanly manner.

:)
