Cold Steel Carbon V Video Destruction Test Completed

G. Scott H.: fantastic.

gak: It's good to see some like yourself have a since of humor about the mask. Some people are wound up way to tight. I like to have fun and try to make the tests fun.

My SRK had a really thick edge when I got it.A really good rubbing with a coarse diamond hone thinned it out so I could use it to my satisfaction.Terrible factory edge.
noss4,Have you ever considered testing tomahawks? cheapos vs the high end hawks would be a great branch out.
Keep up the good work.

Here are some photos of the SRK tang and blade after the test.

savagesicslayer: Tomahawks would be very interesting. Got any suggestions on makes, models and tests ?

Well, I'm not him, but I have a suggestion or two.

On the low, cheap end, the Cold Steel tomahawks are good cheap beaters, and would be good testers. Condor Knife and Tool makes a tomahawk and a variety of hand axes, and would be interesting because there aren't many reviews on em.
There is also the SOG Fusion Tomahawk, which doesn't have a sterling rep, but might be tougher than thought previously with the new handles.

Don't know much about the high enders, but there is the American Tomahawks various modern hatchets, the Bobby Branton tomahawks, and the Ranger Knives Renegade and Entry Hawk.

On another note, have you considered doing full tests on shorter knives, like the various Scandi knives, like the ones on Ragweed Forge?

On, and on Ragnar's site, there are some hard to find tomahawks, from the Allan Foundry and Slasinski Foundry. They might also be good testers. I have the A-23V Bearded Axe, and it is a fun little piece, but I haven't used it very much.

Bandersnatch: Thanks for the suggestions. I have looked at Condor knives and their tomahawk. I would like to see how their 420HC stacks up against Bucks very tough 420HC.

I have read about the handle issues on the SOG fusion tomahawks. The new handle looks better than the old one.

It all looks very fun and interesting. I'll see if I can get one or two this next month and give them a go. They aren't very expensive.

On the smaller knives. I did a field test on a Mora clipper carbon model. I'm getting ready to put it through it's paces in the shop using scaled back destruction methods. I'll release both tests on it at the same time.

Thanks

Sword and Shield: The next to last test I do is place the blade in the vice and hit the side of the handle to see how much it takes to snap the blade at the tang. Most break very easy however a few like the Ontario RTAK II are very strong and tough at this location. I tired to break the RTAK II this way and could not do so. Also the k-Bar heavy bowie did not break during this and it has a narrow tang but is very tough. The SRK broke in about 2 heavy hits.

The Cold Steel hawks are the beaters I'd like to see you test.I have 3 and they perform well on the trail. The Trail Hawk is a favorite around here try it first.(it's also a favorite of mine too).

I'm glad Noss4 is getting some respect here! He is actually doing a helpful contribution with these test, some people for some strange reason might not like them but many of us do.

Hell I'm willing to donate a basically new Scrapyard Scraper 6 if you like for testing. Let me know.

savagesicslayer: I ordered a trail hawk. It was cheap. We will start here. Thanks.

dante: Glad you enjoy the tests. I have fun doing them for everyone.
Thats cool of you to donate a scrapyard  Lets do it ! I willing if you Are ?
Email me at postmaster@knifetests.com Thanks man.

dante: I sent you an email with my info. If you don't get it email me. Thanks

dante: I got it and sent you another with my info. Let me know if you get it because I some times have problems with people receiving my replys for some reason ?

As for the cutting aspect. I will say that the SRK I had was super sharp as was the recon tanto, the recon scout and all my trailmasters. However, their edges are highly polished so they do not do well on tough materials that require microserrations (from lower grit finish edge) to get cutting action. The SRK will slice skin well and it will go through wood well. Webbing and stuff like that, is tough for the highly polished edge of the SRK, IMO

What other blades can compare in this price range with CS? I ask because although I have Busse's and other high ends it's good to have a few performance beaters around. I have an SRK and I gained some serious respect it after watching the videos.

dante: A Buck nighthawk is a good beater for about 40 bucks or the GI Tanto for about 16 bucks. They both can take a beating without breaking your bank. I'm sure there are others of course.

Noss4 , I love your tests, If you get bored and are in the mood to beat the hell out of some of cold steels knives I would like to see identical models compared back to back old school Carbon V vs new school SK 5 , take your pick srk/recon scout/trailaster etc

While you are at it how about the old aus 8 Kobun vs new school krup 4116 Kobun or any of the others that are same model but new stainless from new factory.

I am really curious to know how much of an impact the big shift in CS's manufacturing has affected things, you appear to be the guy to answer the question.

Keep up the good work

A

archimedes: People have been after me to test the Sk-5 Trail Master the Bushman SK-5 is very thin but can take a beating. I would like to see how a big thick blade made of it will do. Thanks

hey noss4, any chance of testing one of the new srk's with aus8 and see how it compares to the older carbon v model that you tested?,,thanks,,VWB.

vwb563: Defiantly. I'm looking forward to testing Aus8 in any brand since it is widely used in many knives on the market.
