Cold Steel Counter Point I quick review

I have a Recon 1 spearpoint and an Adamas on my list, so i might have the same taste too. definitely addicted, lol.

Trick is to have so many knives she can't spot the new ones ;)

But is that the voice of experience??

The profile must be very thin, if 30 inclusive resulting in such small bevel. My 30 inclusive (rough estimate, as I freehand) on Navy k631 (ffg) leaves about 3mm edge bevel.

Nice polish there. What do you use to mirror it?

I've been eyeing the Hold Out II .. Too expensive down here, 180$!

youtube vid that came up last night says the same thing, that it is the smoothest of the bunch he has had/tested so far.

Very excited for this as the Voyagers and Mini Recon are super smooth...this thing has got to be amazingly smooth.

Yeah it is actually a hair under 30, I checked with a protractor. However, the pictures are misleading due to my crappy camera. The bevel is bigger in real life than it looks on those pictures

600 grit and then 2000 grit sandpaper and then flitz. If you start at about 600 you can keep the laser etching

Wow... that is quite the mark-up... why is it so expensive? If you ever do get the chance, it is a really fun folder as well

No man, compared to the CPI, the voyager/mini recon series are not smooth at all. This thing opens like a well made liner lock. It is actually shocking that a lockback could be this smooth!

Chalk up another one sold here. It seems counter-intuitive for it to be that smooth with all the hype over the tri-ad lock, but the examples I've handled or own have been average-to noticeably smooth. Glad to hear that they have the grinds down too. I was wondering how thick the edge was going to be on this one.

The high price is mostly due to tax (luxury/hobby item), low turnover of goods (cost of fund), and rarity of such shop down here. Victorinox that is categorized as tools can be had at a bit more than online price (excl. shipping)

Hunting is not considered middle class hobby, only the rich can afford that.

CS should send me a commission :D
And yep the grind, despite being short and flat, thins out quite nicely

That is a whole lot of taxes...what country is this?

supposed to be here tomorrow...found my Large Vaquero Voyager that was hiding for a couple weeks also :)

Will have to get some training media set up for the day after when I'm off work and have some fun with it

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a CP1 [ i can blame you guys!] expecting it Friday or next week.

Res1cue i cant read what's on your blade it does say Taiwan right? I ask bcz knifecenter claims their CP1 is made in Japan. Typo?

It most definitely says Taiwan. I don't think CS is currently making any folders in Japan

Think I'm going to try to return my CP1 (need a printer)...bad blade grind especially at the tip, something that looks like a tiny dead bug on the inside, lock-up is very gritty (requires strong shake when depressing lockbar or slight push from other hand's thumb to move blade from open position), inside of blade tang has surface rust, inside of liner holes looks horrendous, back of blade tang has a nick in it that would need a lot of buffing and engages only right side of stop pin, etc. Worse CS folder I've seen by far out of 16 years handling a bunch and owning quite a few....really one of the worse folders fit and finish wise I've seen regardless of brand or price.

I can see how it will eventually get very smooth as it pops open nicely even with the gritty initial action, but not sure if I feel like trying to clean it up honestly. Handle butt does dig into my thumb joint when I thumb cap it as I suspected it might, so I would have to round that off also.

Definitely seems like a great design for tactical folder but needs slight changes for me and definitely needs to come in better shape...gives me a very strange impression that it was a blemish that was sitting in the back of the warehouse for a couple months and a worker sneaked a few of them out to retailers.

Wow. Sorry you had such a bad experience, bro

It speaks poorly about their QC that they let that one through..

Going to contact CS to see what they say also as it seems like too many dings on an out the box condition checklist...I can understand one or two but....

The two Large Voyagers purchased in October and Mini Recon 1 just two weeks ago were as good as any production knife in the fit and finish department that I've ever seen in person. The ones in the past purchased for me or bulk buy for unit were all from very good to simply excellent. Hoping there are not samples out there that shouldn't be in retail system.

Just got my CP1 yesterday.Fit,finish, blade grind, etc were all perfect. Sounds like you just got a bad one that slipped by QC.I would send it back for an exchange. When you get a good one,I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Cold steel knives have really good and even grinds......and perform as advertised.Their aus8 gets sharp easily and holds edge well.....I put some of these knives through hell and they never failed.Cold steel folders when reprofiled cut better than most other knives on market.....they cut and slice same as any Spyderco....no difference in performance, just much tougher!

I agree they make excellent products, but everybody makes lemons now and then.... case in point, OrdnanceBubbaUSMC's experience.

Mine is due in Monday. Within the last year I've ordered 4 Voyagers, a Spartan, & a Ti-Lite. All Taiwan products. My friend ordered an Ak-47 & a Recon 1. No fit & finish issues so far. Good edges out of the box. Even the Spartan's lock isn't too stiff. Not too sure about the factory bevels, though. I can't eyeball the angle too well. I did reprofile the Voyagers on the Sharpmaker after changing the finish & it's definitely a good bit thinner. This "Grivory" stuff on my Spartan isn't the same stuff that's on my Voyager. Much softer & grippier.
