Cold Steel Hater?

"I like CS products. Its fine to have your own opinion about CS and I have the right to claim that your opinion is more BS than LT can put out."

I agree - and this pretty much sums up the CS bashing threads like this one.
It's funny how many people have come to rely on CS products over the last two decades. The web is littered with praise from real outdoorsmen and military. It's only a few (insert whatever word(s) here you want) on this forum that think otherwise.

Cold Steel has a lot of knives that I don't care for . . . and a few that are outstanding.

Here are my favorite Cold Steel products:

Culloden (unfortunately long discontinued, but one of the finest production boot knives ever made)
Vaquero Grande (possibly their best product)
Ti-Lite VI (because it's wrong)
Safekeeper III (a LEGAL "push dagger" that makes a good utility knife)
Urban Pal (GREAT GIFT for your friends).

Not too keen on many of their newer products, though.

i'm pretty much on the same page as you. there's no denying that LT doesn't exactly make it easy to like his company, but there's also no denying that they do have some really high quality products.

About one out of ten CS reviews have nothing really to do with their product' just the owner.;)

I have always liked cold steel knives their designs, steel and of course the sheaths that come with the higher end blades and i don't know what their kydex is like now but all of mine have the best kydex sheaths available in factory offerings... much thicker and tougher than any others in their price range.

I'll tell ya an excellant product by CS and one that you rarely see anymore if at all is the CS El Hombre I belive it is called. It is the Vacquero styled knife only with a 4" highly recurved blade with a plain edge. I have one and without a doubt one of the finest lock back folders ever made imho. The blade is very wide, bigger than its 4" length would suggest and the handle ergos for a plastic handled knife are pretty excellant too. Thats it. keepem sharp

I have this knife too! i think it's called an el hombre (mine is the large version) It truly does cut way outta proportion to it's size! no one can deny that claim if they have actually used this awesome piece of cutting power.

I've hard used a number of Cold Steels Bowies and have been more than satisfied with their performance. Because of the switch to SK-5 in a number of their knives, I recently tested a Laredo Bowie in that steel and was pleasantly surprised with how it performed, especially with the accompanied price drop.

I only own 2 coldsteel knives.SRK ans Master hunter. They're the old carbon v ones. But I own all of their tomahawks.inexpensive and fun to play with.I'll stick with my RAT-5,Fallkniven S-1 or my Ka-bar.I don't think cold steel has made copies of them yet.

It is the El Hombre`. Just looked at the name and edited my above post. Everybody copies everybody be it in folders or fixed blades. Some get copied more than others which seems to me to be the more popular disigns anyways. keepem sharp

I bought the roach belly and trailhawk just recently...they haven't disappointed me..well not yet anyway. yes, LT is a fruity ass'd, chunky little f'er. No, I don't agree with bashing other companies to try and make yourself look good (I was always told folks that tore others down to build themselves up always: A.) Had something to hide, and B.) Got what they had coming in the end). But I do like good products at a good price. Knife nut? Nope. But what I am is a survivalist and woodsman who needs dependable stuff that is affordable. I know I'll never own a CR Sebenza or anything by Busse (as much as I'm clamoring for one) so I have to look for the most bang for my buck. CS fills that with some of their stuff, so I'm content to let LT run his mouth as long his outfit keeps making some good stuff. Can't please everybody all the time.

Ive got one of the old US made Trailmasters in Carbon V that Ive thrashed hard. Its a great chopper. Also one of the old Ready-Edge 3 finger knives with the pin and hole thru the blade sheath. That said, I would not buy any of their newer knive because I have read the reviews here that really have no good reason to be biased.

Forgot the CS Recon1 folders. Axis lock(licensed from BM) and just all around hell for stout folders. My son has 2 I gave him. He uses the clip point as his main carry knife and trust me on this he uses it pretty much every day and heavily too. Just the nature of his job. I just cleaned it up for him a couple of weeks ago and the thing was filthy with grit, dirt, and lots of pocket fuzz. Blade is in relatively decent shape although scarred up. Thing is is that this knife still operated butter smooth and locked up at 100%, no blade wiggle at all. Never have I or him adjusted the pivot on it. Still centered too. Knife is about 2+ years old I think. If they made the spear point in a p.e. I would probably carry it religously. Just don't care for serrations on a folder. They are usually put in the wrong place anyways. Anyhow my 2cents again. keepem sharp

I have owned several CS knives, and sold most. However, the Carbon V Master hunter and Ozark Classic Hunter are two that I use a lot, and won't let go. They get and stay sharp, and do the job for which they are intended really very well. In fact, i really enjoy using them. That is not to say that I would give up my BM 710HSSR as my edc, or some others for them, but they are just good honest, good steel knives.

The reason I like this Forum is people can buy knives and then get on here and tell everyone just how they fared with their purchase. Negative or positive I want to hear what ya' got to say, so ... carry on ...

Copy may be the wrong word. How about emulate designs. Classic example is the Loveless Dropped hunter. Most people call it a drop point but a ton of makers emulate that design, Scagle designs too, silver wire inlay ala Moran/Hendrickson, etc. etc. keepem sharp

Longbow,

The El Hombre lives on as the "Large Vaquero." Same shape; same serration pattern (no more plain edges); and newer versions have VG-1 instead of AUS-8A (a case of 'cheaper' being just as good or better).

JNieporte,

I thought your reviews were well-written. For the Ka-Bar versus Cold Steel, it'd be neat to know how and why the Ka-Bar Dozier won in your competition, but knowing it won in making JNieporte happy is good enough.

On the plus-side, it's nice that some folks are bothered enough by your reviews to label you as a "Cold Steel Hater" because who cares that you don't like some of their knives? If it's someone from Cold Steel, they should have their contractors make better knives; if it's not some from Cold Steel, well, that's too funny.

I have a mint El Hombre 4-incher with a cowboy on the side and an oversize clip. If I'm not mistaken, the new Vaqueros offer a very similar 4-incher with VG-1. I, too, like the Vaqueros, though some people complain about Cold Steel's serration pattern is so fine that some of the teeth break under certain cutting chores. I've heard that VG-1 is better for plain edges, but I'm not sure about serrated; no one has reported on it. I've never chipped any teeth with AUS8, though, but I'm pretty careful about what I cut.
