So I ordered one of these today, and I'm really excited... Does anyone have one of these as well? If so, what are your thoughts? I'm really impressed with cold steel's triad locks (I'm not a fan of liner locks) and for about 50 bucks on Amazon I couldn't say no.

This will be my first folding knife, and I'm crossing my fingers that it will be something that will last a loooong time.

The American Lawman is a great knife for the money. I dont think you will ever hurt it. It is a very tough folder. I have the a custom one made by Andrew Demko himself and it is AWESOME! You made a good 1st pick for a folder. Enjoy and I bet it wont be your last folder :D:D:D Kevin

I have and and agreed with everything the previous poster said. It's an excellent knife for the money: very good design, very grippy G-10 handles, decent blade steel (won't hold an edge forever but takes a very sharp edge and touches up easily), and extremely stout. You made an excellent choice for your first folding knife.

Its a nice EDC knife thats pretty tough and has a killer lock. The lock is sorta stiff, but you get used to it, and - depending on what you use it for - that black teflon coating may come off on the first use as mine did. I think it looks good with some mileage on it. But overall its highly recommended and a good value. Welcome to BF!

You'll have to add your own sweet, killer, mirrored edge, but this is what my Lawman looked like after cutting sod for 5 minutes.

Oh man, you guys are awesome. I'm even more psyched to be getting this knife.

I gotta ask though... how grippy are the grips? Most of the reviews I've read say that they can wear down your pockets when clipped to them. I'm not really concerned about this since most of my jeans are pretty "battle worn" as is :D

The G10 is grippy as all hell. I really like the Lawman. I find it a bit uncomfortable unless I'm wearing gloves, but other than that it's a truly solid blade and pretty darn well made.

Got one and like it, but it isnt love! The clip and g10 chew up my pocket!! The grip is far too course, I love the shape quite a bit. And the lock...tri-ad is the best lock I have used on a knife!!! The is an Andrew Demko design that CS uses. His custom is one of my favorites!!! Andrews handle is awesome. But once again the lawman handle....I am not nuts about it. I does chew up my hand if I use it for a while. I guess I could shape it for I do love everything else about it. Blade shape is also very good. And I dont hate AUS8A either it has held up better then I thought! Like the choil. For the sub 50 bucks I paid for it, it is a nice folder and looks to hold up for a while. The coating is wearing off as pictured above by powernoodle but I havent had a knife other than an ESEE that the black didnt come off of.

Is it possible to sand down the grips a little bit, or would that be more trouble than it's worth?

If you have the right torx to remove the clip, it takes about 3 minutes to smooth out the G10 just a little.

In a stupid act of impulse, I decided to stab my Hold Out III (a thinner tipped Cold Steel knife) through a door a repeatedly to see if it really could hold up to the abuse they advertise. Just a tiny scratch near the tip was a result. I'm sure people have done even more abusive things without damage, the AUS-8A really is pretty tough.

I Beat the crap out of my Recon 1 tanto and have no I'll effects to speak of except broken serrrations(cold steel serration's blow) I ground them off it's not pretty but holds an edge and still gets beat on.

The grips are VERY grippy. I have a CS Recon 1 Tanto which I modified the 2nd tip into a drop point. Great EDC hard-use knife. Some may say it's too big, and I can agree with that, but the thin profile of the knife makes it excellent in the pocket for me.

As for the wear and tear on the pants, yes they can certainly do that. I first removed the clip and sanded down half of that side with 220 grit sand paper. Not super smooth, but enough to be nicer to the pockets. When I fastened the clip back on, I left just enough wiggle to allow a looser carry (the clip is very tight and strong). Finally, I convexed the edge to give it a lot more strength. Now it's my best hard-use EDC.

It's one of my EDCs. I like it a lot. The AUS8 that Cold Steel uses seems to be better than some other companies' AUS8 possibly due to the heat treat. Good ergos. It's also a knife which goes camping with me each and every time I go.

I have an old Recon 1 that I have used for 10 years. Tough as hell. The Aus8 is pretty tough steel in my experience. I have a buddy who bought one of the old recon 1 tanto's on my recommendation (recommended because he does stupid things with knives) He forced the car lock on his old beater vehicle once up in the mountains while snowboarding (put the tip in the lock, leaned all his weight into it, and twisted hard enough to break all the tumblers in the lock). That same winter, later on, he did it again, and since the lock was just freely spinning, he cut and pried the door panel open to get to the mechanism.

Both times, I only had to do a bit of sharpening to take the nicks out of the edge.

I also carry a new recon 1 clip point with the triad lock. Tough, and light!

You will enjoy your lawman. It is a great, useful blade shape, just about the strongest lock I can think of (outside a custom triad lock!).

I found that the super grip of the handle mellowed a bit with carry and use. I had fully intended to hit lightly with some sandpaper, but just never have.

About the AUS-8 steel... has anyone had it chip or dent? How rough can you be with this thing?

I find that AUS-8 edges will roll before they will chip, which to me is a good thing. Yes the steel will dent. You can be plenty rough with it, though, as AUS-8 is easy as anything to resharpen.

Love this knife. I did some small, simple mods; stripped the coating, left hand carry pocket clip, small lanyard. It's a great knife and it can take just about anything thrown at it. I recently cut down a small tree with it. I used the baton method. It took the licking and kept on ticking. It's in my EDC rotation and I personally love the AUS 8. I can get a razor edge on it with my shaprmaker. Great knife.
