Cold Steel Lawman

Hey xjzhx, How did you strip the coating off your lawman? That looks great.I've been trying to strip the coating off my lawman, with not so good results so far.

I actually used a small SAK and pretty much just carve it off. It took me a while but it worked really well.

Heavy body paint and varnish remover also works great. Mine took less than an hour to get the coating off with just about no elbow grease involved.

What's the coating on the thumbstud? Is it a different one than the one on the blade? Every mod I've seen with the blade cleaned seems to have a black thumbstud.

ive removed coating off several lawmans and ak47's... just looks better with a black thumbstud :p

I bought a mini AL on the forums with the black paint removed and I probably would not have bought one otherwise. Looks much improved, IMO.

To any and all who are going to sand down G10, please wear the proper respiratory as G10 fibers can and will cause serious lung problems. A simple mask will not suffice your going to need an aerator mask probably about $40 at home depot or lowes, but you need one that protects against both particulates and fumes. G10 dust is nasty stuff.

I'm not sure. Some kind of DLC or parkerizing, maybe, but I really don't know. Whatever it is, it's a lot tougher than the cheap teflon coating on the blade. The paint stripper didn't making any kind of dent in it.

So I ordered one of these today, and I'm really excited... Does anyone have one of these as well? If so, what are your thoughts? I'm really impressed with cold steel's triad locks (I'm not a fan of liner locks) and for about 50 bucks on Amazon I couldn't say no.

This will be my first folding knife, and I'm crossing my fingers that it will be something that will last a loooong time.

I'm a fan of the Triad lock. I've bought several now since the first which was the Lawman full size and while the Rajah 1, and both my Voyager Triad locks are great earning just as much confidence and trust I still favor the Lawman over all the others and carry one a lot. The Mini AK47 I have sees some pocket time also but then, I've modified that one so it would stand to reason that I carry it more. The Lawman is a great model and I like things it brings to the table like the choil. The deep seating twack of the lock hammering down when you open it is a very satisfying sound I must say!

Anyway, about all anyone can find to fault these knives is the blade steel but honestly I cannot imagine that even if it had a better edge keeping steel that I would have any more confidence in the model I carry a whole lot. They really raised the barr with this lock when it came out. I bought the custom version of the Lawman (AD10) myself. That's how much I liked the Triad lock and the designer.

Do you prefer the hollow grind over a partial flat grind? Wouldn't the latter be a little more resilient?

Initially I admit that I wondered to myself about if hollow grind for the blade grind choice was the best one in a knife of this category. Typically yes I agree that a flat grind would be what you'd expect. Still and even with that said you can't argue with what works. It works so well in fact that I went ahead and got my custom in the same hollow grind.

For what it is worth the tanto blade Voyager is a great knife and their clip point isn't bad either with flat grinds for both. I'd say either of those in the large size are good similar size and weight knives to the American Lawman. The large Voyager Triad I have weighs in at 4.9 oz. and the AL is 4.4 oz. Both about the same length foot print. The Lawman is thinner due to how its built using the G10.

I really like the knife, but the name is a turn-off.

I feel the same way about the Rajah 1. Thats why I renamed mine "BERTHA!" :D
I modified my Lawman rocker arm where you depress the lockbar to release the lock. I put the Boye Detent in the lock because I had noticed in extreme white knuckle grips that I could ever so slightly depress the lock bar down. It was not anywhere near enough to free up the blade with the amount of travel these knives have for the lock notch but regardless it was there and I didn't like it. Taking that middle out of the lock release area fixed it right up for me though. You do have to be very deliberate about releasing the blade now to free it up but its no problem for me even if my wife can't close the thing! She can't close my Voyagers and neither of them are modified!

I was thinking of doing this myself. If you could post any pics of the results,I would love to see it.

I'm not much of a "picture" guy, so I did my best with the i-phone.

I sanded under the clip up to the 2nd screw. As you can tell, the screws are a bit shiny after the sandpaper treatment.

An overview pic. My photo skills are weak.

Anyways, I used a work sharp knife sharpener to get the convex edge. As for the 2nd tip, I first used a sharpening stone (coarse side) to grind it a bit. The WSKT took care of the rest. Careful though, the WSKT can roll your tip if you're not careful.
This picture sucks, but hopefully shows the 2nd tip grinded down a bit.

Here's my CS Lawman. I bought it from fellow forum member trix2004 (Sergey). It looks even better in person. His file work is fantastic.

This is definitely the safer way to do it but for the small amount of sanding you'll be doing you will be fine with a simple mask and doing it outdoors.

If you are competent enough to take your knife apart you can just sand down the scales under running water with a handkerchief on for good measure.

Dust problem solved.

I have the older lined version of the A.L. and it is an absolute tank. I find it interesting how 3-4 years ago on this forum everyone and their mom would poopoo a knife with Aus8 , now it seems to be gaining acceptance once again , which is nice because it has always been a good and tough steel. I really like my Mini A.L. too :)
