Cold Steel Lawman

Got my Lawman today. I really love it... It's so light and razor sharp. This is going to be my everyday knife for sure.

Congrats, what a beaut! I've been eyeballing a few different knives to dedicate to my workbelt (I have a horribly mangled M16 tanto right now, and it's in really bad shape), and this one is starting to really gain ground. I do feel like it might be too nice to relegate to work -- I'd hate to buy it and decide to just EDC it instead, bringing me back to square one.

Allyourblood, you could get the Voyager in 3" or 4" for around $40. That would be easier to put to hard use and scratch it up.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. Yeah, the Voyager's on the short list as well, along with the Spydie Tenacious and Ontario RAT 1. After a few more hours research today, I'm almost leaning toward the Tenacious. I had the Voyager XL and X2 for a while, and the blades are excellent, but the handle material and texturing never really blew me away; a little "cheap"-feeling.

Just my opinion, but if you are using the knife for work I would go with the RAT 1. I have both Tenacious and the RAT 1, and for heavier stuff the RAT 1 is a more stout knife. I work in construction, and sometimes I just stick it in my carpenter's bags while working. I never give it any special treatment and it has had the stuffin' used out of it over the last 18 months cutting shingles, sheetrock, wood, insulation, strapping, etc. Surprisingly to me, the knife still locks up like a vault.

That being said, if it for medium tasks, the Tenacious is a great knife. To me is is a more wicked slicer, but its width is easily felt in my pocket and the handle isn't quite as comfortable for extended use. It isn't as heavily built as the RAT 1, but it is a great knife and I have never had a problem with it.

Thanks, Robert! I'm leaning toward the Tenacious mainly because of that high thumb ramp at the back of the blade. This knife will really see only medium duty, like cutting flagging and scraping/carving marker mistakes from lath, which the thumb ramp seems like it'd be useful for. I've owned several Spyders over the years, and I've never had a single RAT/Ontario/whatever-they're-called knife, so maybe I'll try something "new". I'm torn -- there are so many great knives for under 40 bucks these days, it's silly. I guess there are worse problems to have.

My biggest complaint with this knife is probably the clip. It's too tight to clip to my pants... I had a cheap Kabar folder that was the same way. I don't know why knifemakers make these clips so damn tight. I guess I'm going to need to get a piece of metal in there and see if I can't push it upward.

darkdomino, if you remove the clip first, they're very easy to bend just a slight amount to loosen the grip. I wouldn't recommend trying to flex the clip any appreciable amount while it's still fastened to the frame, for fear of stripping or weakening the screw holes. I'm sure it can be done, but if you can, I'd take it off first.

I find that to be the case with many knives I buy. Adjusting the clip is easy enough. The trick is not taking it too much so you don't end up having to go back and forth. Once you get it properly tensioned you can use it like anything else. You can also sand down a small area of the texturing to make it smoother for easy sliding on and off the pocket. Honestly the company should be doing that on the area where the clip mounts anyways as it really would help reduce the pocket wear. Most of the pocket wear is from the G10 not the clip. At least for me.

Besides knives with G10 scales, do you guys notice pocket wear with scales of other types? Specifically, FRN (on Spyderco Salt 1). Some of my jeans are nice and I think I should sand the scales down, just to be safe.

BTW, this is one reason that I think my Caly 3 with CF scales is right up there at the top as an "almost perfect" EDC knife.
