Cold Steel LTC starter

Opinions please on the CS LTC. I do not own a Khukri and am wondering if you all would consider 60 bucks a decent deal on this knife as a starter. My heart is set on a BIG Sirupati but it will be some time before I can scrape up a spare $125 plus shipping. Also, alternative suggestions in the $60 price range.

Part II, if the Sirupati, with it's, generally, slimmer blade, would also have a handle that is proportionately smaller in diameter? I have short fingers and am a little concerned by the size of the handles on the Khukris with the bigger blades . Thanks in advance for any info/opinions ('Course, I've noticed, no one on this forum is very opinionated).

but I can tell you that there are good deals to be had by watching the forum here. I picked up my 18" WWII as a blem for $95. And in all honesty if I didn't know it was a blem I'd be hard pressed to find fault with it. It chops like a light axe yet is still sharp enough to slice clean through a free standing dendelion. As far as handle thickness, there will be variation, even the same model by the same Kami. I have two 25" sirupatis by Sher and the horn handle is a bit smaller than the wood handle. My WWII's wood handle is in between. But unless your hands are very big or very small I wouldn't worry about it. If you really have your heart set on a siru try to set aside a few bucks from each paycheck and be ready to pounce when Uncle puts one up as a special. Welcome aboard.

Frank

edit: a blem BAS goes for $50-$75. I've also seen 18" sirus go for $75. But ya gotta be quick.

That LTC is very thin and light. I wouldn't pass up their heavier model for $60 but I don't know what purposes they were thinking of when they designed the LTC. I think it's only 1/8" inch thick or so.

I think you're better off checking the forum every day until you see one of those $75 specials.

ichor-- if you keep a close watch on the forum or talk to Uncle Bill, I'm sure you can find something in a comparable price range that will put the Cold Steel LTC to shame. Also, keep in mind that shipping is included in the price. If I tell you how incredibly cool HI khukuris are before you actually hold one, you will think that I am just spouting gibberish, so I will shut up now:) Buy one; you won't be disappointed. I have four, and still lust for more.

I have an early version of the LTC. It's light enough to be used as a machette and handles like one too. I think the overall length is about 17" or so. However, for chopping "stuff" a BAS will probably be a better tool. It all depends on the intended use.

A 15" BAS blem will run around 50-60 bux which is about the same price.

Don't spend $60 on something that is a compromise. Save it or send it to Bill, and then send him some more...etc.

You can not imagine the difference. There are reasonable and rational professionals in this forum who to-all-intents-and-purposes are fully functional members of society, with responsibilies for families, mortgages, careers, even pets...who wait like a kid for the trip to the circus when an HI shipping box is due.

You will never regret your choice to wait. Never.

(Hope I wasn't too ambiguous in My advice.)

Most of the CS "Kukris" are 1/8 inch thick, and they really do make fantastic machetes. They work very well on vines, foliage, etc. The "thick" Kukri at 5/16 is very sharp, and has potential for self defense, nice and long, lots of shearing power in a swing.

If you want to chop wood, however, the flat grind tends to get stuck quite a bit, especially in green wood. Even the large kukri is too light for serious chopping of wood.

The HI khukuris have a convex grind, and it greatly facilitates chopping in wood. Hardly any binding. Probably good at chopping bone, too. They are much thicker than CS's models, hand forged, and about as unbreakable as anything I've ever seen, even my small BAS. The handles on the HI models look primitive, but once you use them, you understand their purpose. They work wonderfully.

So yeah, it depends on what you want to use it for. I like both, but for different reasons.

If you want a khukuri, save your money for HI. You won't be disappointed.

If u'r going to invest, invest in an HI Khuke.Save u'r money,You'll not be sorry but if u'r going to start with u'r first khuke, CS is a good choice.;) I myself started with the CS GURKA LITE KUKE,1/8" THICK,17"OAL.(Before I met HI and UNCLE BILL.)The GLK is a Great handleing knife and very fast for defense.:D I hoped I helped.:) Listen to Swede79 he makes sense also.......FRANK C....

ichor,

Go to one of Bill's posts, and follow his sig url to the HI web site. There you will see the differences between the different models. AK - Ang Khola, BAS - British Army Special.

Go to the site, and do some reading. If the 15 inch AK's are only $75, get it. Right now. You will NEVER be sorry. If you really only have $60, I'll send Bill the $15 via money order.

Ichor,
I'm with most of the other guys in this forum that say to just save up a few bucks and watch for the deals that Uncle Bill posts from time to time. I'm not faulting the cold steel khuks by any means. in fact, i used the mini gurkha light as my main camp knife for a bit. Actually, it was that knife that got me into this forum. I was a moron and forgot my MGL khuk at home when i moved back down to school for the fall semester. i really NEEDED a knife to take on a camping trip that was coming up so i e-mailed Uncle Bill about a "cheap" khuk that i could get quickly and in time for my trip. He steered me right into 15" Villager model and i was hooked. These knives by HI are hands down the most wonderful edged tools you'll ever use. If you go with the CS you won't be disappointed. They're really good production knives for the cash. However, if you save your nickles and dimes and get that siru you wanted you WILL NOT be disappointed. The HI product will also tend to be MUCH easier on the hands than the rubberized grip of the LTC. Just a thought.

I'm a little confused by this "POST FROM UNCLE BILL:" coming from someone else. Sorry to be so obtuse, but who do I actually contact for this deal?

To order, email Uncle Bill at himimp@aol.com and give him your request along with a shipping address and method of payment. That AK overstock deal is really hard to beat, you won't be disappointed.

Uncle Bill's e-mail address is in this thread. Just e-mail him and explain what you need the knfe for or what it will be primarily used for. He will advise you what would be the best blade for the job. You will not be diappointed in the blade he advises you to get. I don't know of any body he has ever dropped the ball on yet.:)

The Cold Steel kukri (sic) just by the fact it doesn't have a cho makes it a bent knife not a khukuri. Besides as already mentioned it is quite light especially in the LTC variation. If you want a real khukuri just watch the forum here or email Uncle Bill. He'll fix you up and you will be much happier you went with an HI khuk than the Cold Steel. The LTC reminds me more of a machete than a khuk. If you want a machete you can get a good new Martindale for $20 or you can get a Kumar Kobra which is a good hybrid knife/machete/sword. Besides the LTC doesn't offer anything special like being stainless. I haven't found any khuks made from stainless steel.
