Well gang , after being set upon by the HI Dogs of War, like a pack of merciless hyenas, I became utterly convinced that NOT spending an extra 15 bucks on the specially priced, $75 15" AK, instead of the CS LTC (which one of you referred to as nothing more than a "bent knife")would be akin to blasphemy. Even if it meant going without food for a few days.

After hearing lament after lament of......"you'll never regret it"....."you don't know what you're missing until you hold a real khukri in your hand"........Don't settle for anything but the real thing........"you'll never be sorry"....ad infinitum, I couldn't help but be swayed.

So, you'll all, zealots that you are, be glad to know that, after a very generous offer from Uncle Bill, this time next week I should have the 15" AK in my hot little hand. Of course, if I'm terribly disappointed, I'll have something really lethal with which to hunt you all down. <grin>

Seriously , thanks to all of you for the advice, encouragement, cajoling, everything short of coercing. Especially the Swede who went as far as to try to bribe me. LOL I'm glad I made the "right" decision.

The first thing I'm going to do is go down to the river and cut several walking and hiking sticks, which i picked out in the Fall and have promised to friends, that have been waiting for the cold to leave them relatively without sap. Then, my next two projects will involve a little study on sharpening beveled edges (especially on that atavistic blade shape) and figuring how to raise enough money to get to the Reno Convention (which would involve a ride from Boise, as I'm car free, and an incredibly cheap place to park my bones).

Thanks again for treating the Khukuri newbie with camaraderie. It's not always so, even in other areas of the bladeforums, and helped in my decision. And don't they say that this blade was meant for me personally? Like it finds the right owner (like a soulmate or something)?

Congratulations! You will enjoy it! Once you touch it, the virus spreads rapidly. It will serve you well, and the first good chop on the sweet spot will drive the virus from your arm into the rest of your body. ;) :D

At least that's what happened to me... If you don't like it, I'm sure one of us will take it off of your hands to round out our collection!

We want a full report!

Mwahahahahahah!!!! Another victory for the HI zealots!!!, er, oh, I mean, congratulations on your purchase;) HI khukuris really do have a way of finding the right home; in the brief time I've been visiting this forum, I've seen it happen again and again. I hope you enjoy your khukuri as much as I've enjoyed all of mine. Please post a report when you get it.

I have to confess I have an ulterior motive. I'm trying to get as many HI khuks stockpiled in Idaho as I possibly can.

An awful lot of big blades were bought by a mysterious Canadian last spring.

When Bruise and company come storming across the border to take our wimmin and make us learn to speak Canadian we'll have to be prepared! :p

As I've said before, the 15" AK is a nice little khuk, but then I look Pala eyeball to eyeball at 5'4". Proportionately larger people may find themselves drawn to the larger blades.

And for the record, I've been an advocate of the 18" WWII's balance and usefulness since a kami's mistake produced the Hanuman Special. That was supposed to be putting the Hanuman's Dui Chirra blade on a standard handle. Instead they put a Hanuman's handle on a lengthened WWII blade. I and others wouldn't let Uncle Bill rest until they put the larger blade on a 16.5" WWII handle. That's how the 18" WWII came to be. ( I also bugged Uncle til he brought back the 12" AK but that's another story ).

"FOOD? We don't need No stinkin' FOOD!!!"

I promise you you will love it. Nice feeling, eh? <--(Please note Canadian idiom)

You won't regret it. The 15" AK is such a cute little eager to please little pup!

Don't worry about the canadians they just want a little heat. Its been a real cold winter up there. I know because some of it has sliped into Syracuse.

You only see them passing through. I see them covering the landscape. This year they brought their weather with them.

Reread my last post, it sounds like I don't much like Canadians. That's not how I meant it.

Well, guys, no surprise that Uncle Bill mailed the AK 15" the same day we communicated by email, so it was on the back step when I came home late tonight (glad the neighborhood delinquents didn't get it). I don't have a lot of time tonight but here are, briefly, my First impressions:

Whoa MAMA! I never dreamed that it would make my 5/16ths Recon Scout and Trailmaster feel like steak knives. ;-) I had no idea that 1/16 of an inch in thickness could make such a difference. Of course, I gather that this is one of those "beefy" ones from Sher, as it is marked with a half sun and S.B. I haven't been able to find, in the vast material available on the HI site, what, if anything, the markings on the right side of the blade, just forward of the bend, signify.

Having never seen one in the "steel", from the pictures I expected the knife handle to be round rather than oval. Hence, a question that I posed on the forum about my concern that it would be too "fat" for my medium, short fingered hands. The oval fits very well, tho' it is taking some time, as it doesn't appear that this knife is properly gripped as one might grip ordinary knives. I wanted the horn handle, but am a little concerned about how slippery it feels.

And whoever said it, you're right about the feeling of a hand forged knife. This is the same feeling I get from my 30 year old Ruana bowie, made by the founder himself. It's a very interesting feeling knowing that this blade was created, from fire to finish by one man, who obviously prides himself in his work.

Anyway, I could go on, but have a couple of pressing matters. Naturally it is pouring down rain here, so no way am I taking my shiny new toy out to the river for chopping walking and hiking sticks. Admit it now, part of the reason you like these is because they're so shiney. ;-)

More to come.
