Cold Steel Marketing

you know what I think is really bullsh*t about all this nonsense?

It's a simple, literal description of the steel, in a foreign language. I just don't think such generic things should be copyrightable, honestly. It's like, well, if I try to say I've copywrighten the word 'knife' but in a foreign language, or any word.

San=3 (the number) & Mai=unit counter for flat objects

so - what normal folk (non-lawyers) see when BS is trying to be passed as legit, is the same thing Shakespeare said about lawyers 400 hundred years back...

It wasn't Shakespeare, but one of his "unsavory characters" from Henry IV part II who said that, while planning to overthrow the king.

I'm very familiar with it, and the character, 'Dick' who said it was rather evil... but the thing is, there is a reason people keep bringing Shakespeare up with regard to lawyers, justified or not.

The marketing is over the top, Lynn acts like a clown most of the time but both of my Cold Steel knives are good quality and I do feel they fall into the hard use and abuse category.

I have a large Voyager clip point and a Code 4 tanto. Lock up is rock solid and they both drop free, cant ask for much more. I did JB weld under the Voyagers clip, and I put some grip tape on the Code 4, I need to bend the clip out a bit too but for the money they are great knives.

What is Reate not being honest about?

I got the same question.

That they will eventually put every other knife company out of business.

Did Reate people like David Deng say it or some other people? If the latter, how could you blame Reate of that and call them not being honest? If the former, could you cite a source?

You can't compare a Reate to a Cold Steel. It is like comparing a Porcshe to a Ford Fiesta.

More like comparing a inexpensive Casio to a Rolex. That Ford Fiesta comparison casts aspersions of low quality and an unreliable nature, which isn't really accurate.

Keeping with the automobile theme, more like comparing a Honda Civic to a Tesla. Both are solid cars, but one has a lot more fancy business going on, looks cooler, and is considerably more expensive.

Weirdly, I'm less angry about that than the CRKT lawsuit. Wrongly or rightly, they got the trademark on San Mai, and while I feel that is a load of BS, you have to defend a trademark or you lose it. It was still obnoxious and distasteful, but I honestly think that one they probably felt forced into whereas the CRKT suit just strikes me as entirely frivolous.

I can't truthfully answer the question without getting political, so let's call it my opinion for the purposes of this thread. I don't think think companies to whose products I am loyal are threatened at all by cold steel, or their marketing. AND this thread is not about reate, so Im not discussing it any further than this.

I enjoy videos with Demko and skip videos with Thompson. I think they aren't that bad compared to other companies selling overpriced and too thick to be a knife stuff where marketing is based only on slogan "made in USA".

I've often wanted to sue CRKT just for getting me all excited over a novel new design only to dash my hopes with their actual crappy defective product . Should be a criminal offense ! :(

Bit of nonsense right there. Your comparison implies the Reate has the performance of the Porsche, which simply isn't true. A cheap Recon 1 would outperform any Reate in all categories apart from flashy trims and fancy material. Funny how people forget knives are tools, these days they've become jewellery and people judge them as such. Judge a knife as a tool and on what it's capable of and you'll see the tables turn pretty quick. The Reate might suit your latest pair of skinny jeans better, but out in the bush doing real hard work? not so much..

Materials, overall fit and finish, there is more than just being a tool. Knife enthusiast like different aspects. Personally I cannot stand Cold Steel but,,,, I get the value part. For the money its one of the best budget knives out there. CS low end knives compete with their high end knives. Materials etc are the difference. Most knives out perform anything people put them thru.

I buy USA made knives for my own reasons. If knives were only tools their wouldn't be thousands of choices.

You are preaching to the choir here mate, I own plenty of CRK's and for that very reason. My reasoning behind my statement was in response to the ludicrous "porsche/ford fiesta" comparison statement, which i still stand behind.

  1. They are two totally different classes of knives. You really can not compare them. That was my point. Both of those cars will get you to work......
  2. I don't dislike CS nor am I defending Reate.

Say what you will about Lynn. Say what you will about his advertising. Yea its a little ridiculous but its also entertaining. Is watching Knife or Death any different? At the end of the day, I dont think anyone here has said it was false advertising.
