I was lucky enough to win a giveaway by daniel4572 recently. The prize was a pocket bushman. I have never had one of these, or any other Cold Steel product for that matter with the exception of a few frontier hawks...

It arrived the other day, brand spankin new. I really like this folder. Its big, locks up like a tank with 0 blade play and the blade is perfectly centered. They have a utility look to em that I love. The blade is very sharp. I dont know if Dan sharpened it or if they come this way, but It has a very nice edge on it.

With a price of 30.00, its not a high end folder, but its price point and solid build make it a great blade. This will become my blade I pack when airline traveling. Its price, and overall quality makes it perfect for this. If some POS TSA agent decides to have sticky fingers, this knife can be easily replaced from several vendors, for a relatively cheap price. Thelook of the knife is also very low key, so it wont get alot of attention if you are in an area of the world where your wealth, is measured by what watch you are wearing, or knife you are using. Therefore maybe reducing the risk of being robbed. I can tell it wouldnt be the most comfortable knife for bushcrafting tasks, but for a tough, no frills, working blade big enough to take the place of a fixed blade if need be, easily concealable, this one would get the job done. I can see it as a good knife to keep in a BOB, or in your POV.

The lock on this one is so strong, it almost becomes a fixed blade when opened. I know some people dont like Cold steel, but all politics aside, this is a great knife, for a great price, and worth a look.

Thanks Daniel for the knife. I am really happy with it. It fills a role well for me, if only I knew about it when I was in the Cav. It would make a military guy a great folder.

Great post J..... I have been eyeballin' one of these for some time, now. Never found a folder that I felt was strong enough.... maybe this is it.

Rick

Despite what its detractors have to say about it it's a very rugged knife that's great for the price. My only complaint is that it's a little soft-steeled but it's always better to have a knife that will bend rather than break. You can always resharpen a blunted blade.

Give er a shot Rick. Im with you. I have pretty much swore off folders, and now carry a small fixed blade EDC. However this one is super strong!!

Yeah the Cold Steel marketing machine and "cloning" of some well known designs can be a major turn off.
However CS does make some really good knives as well.
I've been tempted by this pocket Bushman design.
I have to confess i own 7 CS products, 2 machetes, 2 (tru-balance clone) throwing knives, a Trailhawk, an ancient modded Ready-Edge and a Black Rock Hunter.
I bought the Black Rock Hunter around X-mas time and its actually a really interesting design.
Very strong, kinda like a weird lovechild of a bali-song and a slipjoint.

Thats an interesting knife!!

Yeah their DVDs are hilarious. Its almost like they are spoofing themselves, but they are serious!! Its funny.

The pocket bushman is a cool knife though, and their hawks are awesome. I dontknow about the others, but I have alwas been interested in the Master hunter in carbon V.

I have a Pocket Bushman too. It is pretty stout. It'd be a nice kit knife I'd think since it stores away pretty compactly, but carries a good sized blade. The lock is stout too. A bit of a bear to close but I suppose that's good in a way. It isn't one I'd use for routine and frequent EDC but its an interesting field blade.

I've handled a few in person and I really like this knife. It opens and carries pretty easily but closing it in a PITA. It is like opening up a fixed blade though. Very tough and the handle is all one piece.

I wouldn't leave it in the sun too long, looks like it would get hot really fast :p

Perhaps adding some sort of key ring on the lanyard hold would make it easier to disengage the lock.

Great review, J.

Hmm that could be. I was just fooling with my Okapi and the Cold Steel Okapi and they use the key ring to help disengage the lock. That could well work on a Pocket Bushman too!

I just won a bid on one on ebay that I'm waiting for in the mail. It is a strong design and will be going in a backup survival kit.

I've had one since Christmas. Santa left it for me.

I really like it in all reality and was carrying quite frequently.

It is a solid lock up and for the price a great blade that is functional and durable that you wouldn't be heart broken over if it got damaged or lost. A great throw in the pack or truck blade.

The lock disengagement isn't difficult once you get used to it and for what it is, it isn't a quick deployment fighter. It is what it is and I'm happy with mine.

Good stuff for the price.

On a fun (and dangerous) note, you can open it "one handed" by holding it by the lanyard, blade facing behind you, and swing it behind you hard. The blade flies open! :D  :D

I like mine, and it seems like it has gotten a little easier to close. Or maybe I'm just getting used to it.

Thanks for the review. I have been wondering about the quality of this knife. Looks like an alternative to carrying a fixed blade in sheeple infested areas!
