Cold Steel Ranch Boss

Fine bone, interesting steel and I like the shield. However, I don't go for high riding Sheepfoot, that puts me off any Stockman with it. Incidentally, what is the approx cost of these?

I agree. I really wish companies wouldn't keep the very high riding design afloat. Especially when the tip is above the frame when the spey blade is open.

MSRP is 350$. You can find them for about 200$. They aren’t worth 350$. 200$ is about right.

They are limited. I think 650 or so where made.

I don't think $200 is a ridiculous price, mostly considering the rarity of such a modern steel on a very traditional knife. I really like S35VN but $200 was a little high for me not knowing the manufacturer. If it was Canal Street that would make me want one more, as I lost my only Canal Street knife (the BF knife forget what year)

600 made. Lynn kept the first 50. Employees bought 120. The rest went to distributors.

He kept 50?! He must have really liked them haha

You'd think if this was true he'd have kept the low numbers...but I had and sold 042, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

I believe they were indeed made by Canal Street.

I agree. I think this is why I dislike most Stockmen patterns, and Congress patterns as well. A Stockman with a California clip can set the other blades very low into the handle. The much more common large clip forces the other blades to ride higher to facilitate opening.

I just picked one up. It is indeed a Queen #49. One of my favorite patterns. Beautiful knife but the action is a little gritty and not as smooth as it should be.
I'll get some pics up later.

I was going to start a Ranch Boss thread but then got smart and went searching for a thread already started. Looks like I found one.
My stipulation / feature of the thread I wanted was that addition numbers be listed. You got that covered.
Mine is #297

Interestingly enough the blades are ground thinner than the Case, so it should be a really good cutter.
Yes I'm impressed by that. I've been using it but look forward to getting all of the blades properly sharp to really see what it can do.

I have wanted one of these since they came out but what with one thing and another (stories of poor FF, other knives to buy and a down turn in my work) I have put off buying one.
With the up turn at work followed by an increase in pay I went looking for and bought a brand new Ranch Boss.

I've been called to dinner so more later.

I finally grabbed a Ranch Boss to go with my super steel Buck forum knife. F&F is very good. Centered blades, no rub, no gaps. The only thing I might gripe about are the pulls - probably around a 3, especially the spey. It's not unsafe, but compared to the pulls on my similar sized Bulldog Cattle King, at maybe a 7+, they're a surprise. Part of that may be the length of the blades and the placement of the nail nicks, which are all pretty far out from the pivot. If I pull the clip at the same distance from the pivot as the Buck, the pulls feel about the same. The frame size is my favorite for a serpentine, at 4 1/4" it fills my hand nicely but doesn't feel like too much knife. They got about the most length possible out of that clip blade, at 3 7/16" from the bolster, it's at least a 1/4" longer than the clip on the Cattle King, and I wish it wasn't. We'll see how I like it in use, it might be a non-issue. For a Benjamin, it's a great value.

Pics with the 2018 forum knife and with the Cattle King.

I've been tempted many times by these. I'd probably need to had pick one to pull the trigger.

I like tougher springs and no gaps. Flush springs open and closed.

That might be difficult. They didn't have many made, they didn't sell well, and they can't make more without a lot of difficulty. Like setting up a new manufacturer. When these are gone, they're gone. Lots of dealers are out of stock. I got a closeout deal and I'm happy.

Me too. But there aren't many traditional options for decent stainless, so I'm willing to compromise. And price comes into it. For $100, I'm not demanding GEC levels of F&F. Had I paid MSRP, or even original street price, it would have gone right back. Springs are very near flush when closed, not flush when open. It's going to be a user, so minor cosmetic issues aren't issues. The soft springs I can live with, I carried a Buck for years that was pretty soft. I think that softer springs are safer. If you do something ill-advised, the knife will fold on you before you have much pressure built up and you're less likely to get cut. They just aren't as satisfying. :)

I was told they where made by queen on their 49 pattern. Check out the other 49’s. Seem to be identical save minor details.

Has anyone seen the 11 listings currently on the bay - seller says the Ranch Boss was made by Queen Cutlery. "This knife was made by Queen Cutlery in their factory for Cold Steel." Wonder how he knows for sure ? By the way, Great ! looking knife - I am definitely going to have to get one.
