Cold Steel Recon 1 differences

The Strange thing is that the old Catalogs, 2003 - 2005 listed the Steel as 440A Sub Zero Quenched, but there was no mention of it in their Steel Lineup, but 420J Sub Zero Quenched was.

The 2002 Catalog the Steel is listed as AUS-8A.

The Steel Listed as AUS-8A again in the 2006 Catalog.

So From the Catalogs:

2002 - AUS-8A (Made In Japan ZYTAL Models)

2003 - 2005 - 440A Sub Quenched (Taiwan ZYTAL Models) In question....

2006 and forward - AUS-8A (G10 Models)

Must have been a Misprint in the Catalogs on the Steel on the Recon 1 from the information that I have.

I am checking on it again to see what the deal is.

Yes, I agree that' odd. It's like my Cold Steel Bush Ranger - sold recently. It was a beatiful convex, clip point bowie. It was a 20+ yr. old safe queen and perfect so I decided to sell it and finance other knives.

I posted on Cold Steel Forum about the blade steel and the answers came back as Carbon V, but this was made in Japan. I looked through my VCR collection and found the "PROOF" video tape and there it was - black was Carbon V and the Stainless version was AUS8 if made in Japan.

They did make a limited amount in China/Taiwan using a steel called 4116 Krupp from what I learned on the forum there also.

It would be easier to tang stamp the steel like most knives, heck, my large Voyager sitting here says Made in Japan on one side & VG-1 on the other side. Others don't give too much to go on.

Darn these Voyagers are light, large and sharp! Can't wait to see what they roll out in 2011 to replace them. :)

You can't upload the DVD, it copyrighted.

Anyone can go to the CS website and view the old catalogs so it's pointless anyway.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I have an older gen Recon 1 tanto on the way. I like the blade shape a little better, even though it's only sort of tanto. I wish they made the new ones with a drop point blade. I'd buy one right now. Not as big a fan of the clip point.

SO, I waited over two weeks for the knife to get here and...Cheaper Than Dirt sent the wrong knife. I ordered and paid for the old model Recon 1 and got the new one. It does lock up pretty nice, but I like the blade shape on the earlier model and this one is way too wide to fit in the knife pocket on my flight suit.

Anyone have an early recon 1 tanto folder for sale?

If that doesn't pan out I like the Lum Ti. What should I be willing to pay for one and how is the CPM-C4 steel?

Looking at Ankerson's pics. ther doesn't seem to be much difference in width? At least in the clip points.

May just be me... But my g10 american lawman seems just as sturdy as my older style recon 1.

The newer models are much better....

If you want to buy a knife, start a thread in the appropriate forum. It would be better than bumping an old thread and risking a yellow/red chiclet:
Want To Buy Knives

Sorry to dig this one up, but didn't see the point of starting a new thread about a two month old topic. Does anyone have a comparison shot of the second generation tanto recons as compared to the original Japanese made ones? I am looking to pick one of the gen 2's up because of what I remember was a wider/more stout blade but all I have to go off of is my original.

Danke in advance

I was doing some research on knives that I inherited, and this thread helped me a ton. :D

Just found two of these older Recons today. A serrated tanto and a brand new clip point. I don't plan on hanging 600lbs off the handle, so this Ultra Lock is great. I love that the lock bar is captured in the tang, making it, in my opinion, stronger than an Axis lock.
