I like them. They get a bad wrap because the owner is a douche bag. They hold up good and get really sharp.

Just like what Emerson and Benchmade do for 154CM, Cold Steel does for AUS-8 and VG-1. They yard every bit of toughness and edge holding they can out of AUS-8 and seem to do a good job of it. I have no complaints with CS steel treatment.

I have an SRK that is now a full convex, or i guess a saber-convex courtesy of the folks at Bark River. It may be the sharpest knife i own. Before the grinding job it was a bugger to sharpen, now it is easier to maintain.
Kinf of a costly knife now, after the work was done, but it is unique.

I have both the Aus 8a and carbon 5 versions. Although I think the carbon5 version is stronger, I've had no probs beating the tar outta my aus8a one. I don't have to worry about rust there either. Both excellent knives.
Do not buy a factory second.Get a new one.:thumbup::D

I have a carbon V knife from CS and it works well. I also have several 1095 knives that are a 1/4" thick from TOPS. It is not an A to A, B to B comparison but the TOPS products always works MUCH better.

I had one for about three months before it conveniently (or not so...) disappeared out of my desk drawer. Mine was in Carbon V. I loved that thing to death. One of my alltime favorite combat utility knives. Definitely worth the 60 bucks, and if I can find another at that price in the future I'd eat it up. Ergo is great, very well balanced, nice prominent yet strong point, strong blade, but a very useable and maintainable edge. Allaround an outstanding working knife.

One of the--in my opinion--few knives from Cold Steel that absolutely deserves "classic" status. I have a couple in Carbon V and they're great, strong, sharp heavy duty knives. There are others I prefer but I only have around $65 wrapped up in both of them (PX prices at Fort Campbell) and damned if I've often been as impressed for the same amount of money.

+2. SRK's are in my top 5 favorite CS knives, and it's darn near bulletproof in San Mai steel. Even w/the premium steel, can still be found online for under $100.

Lynn Thompson is indeed by all accounts of those who've met him, arrogant, opinionated, and full of himself. But he does know knives, and more importantly for his company, he knows the knife business. IMO, the biggest reason "insiders" hate CS is because CS is, well, big and markets aggressively.

I admittedly like CS knives overall and think most of their products are a great value, but the thing to remember is that you should judge the knives' quality on the knives' quality, not on anything else.

The carbon V srk was a really amazing knife for an awesome price. If you can get one in carbon v i highly recommend you get that rather than the aus8a. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with aus8a, i think they make good knives with it.

I have one and I like it, it's tough, sharp and stay sharp and stout as heck. It has been superseded by my Becker BK-1 Crewman, then the Gerber LMF II, then the Gerber Prodigy, and now by me ESEE RC-4 for camp carry and use.

CS makes some pretty good knives for the most part.

I use an original CS Master Hunter in Carbon V and have an original year issue SRK that I have never used. It has the epoxy coating they used to put on in the 80's or late 80's I should say. Great knives imho. keepem sharp

Actually the first SRK's were parkerized and had a way steeper grind. More literally a sharpened pry bar. Cold Steel heard the complaints and put on a higher grind and started using the baked-on coating instead of the park finish.
Originals also came in a simple nylon sheath.

Ahh, that takes me back :)
