Cold steel to use s35vn more and XHP less

I recently picked up an uncoated s35vn Recon and tonight I had to use it to open 3 cans of pasta sauce with it. Not even a tiny scratch on the blade and it cut thru the tins like butter. Impressive IMO.

Yeah, I know it isn’t the best use of a knife but I threw out our can opener recently as it was rusted and forgot to replace it.

I have no problem with either steel in any case.

I believe that xhp , as CS provided , has excellent edge retention. Seems somewhat better than that of my s30v blades. We ll see how the CS version of s35v compares.
I regret the change.

I'll second this, I've used my new Recons in s35 to cut everything i can, still no rolls or flat spots, just a nice gradual drop off on the edge to a nice working edge. Few swipes on the fine sharpmaker rods and it's popping hairs again. I see no decline in performance from my XHP Recons and I've been using the XHP models since the day they came out as my primary work knives so i feel i'd have noticed pretty easily. People can say what they will about Lynn etc. but CS know how to heat treat IMO.

why everyone needs a swiss army with can opener.;)

i prefer xhp to s35vn. i also prefer s30v to s35vn....but they are close enough there is no real difference in use.

I've got an AK 47 in that tan. I don't really care for the color either. But, one thing about it is I think you could dye it to something more agreeable. I haven't tried it yet,but I'm considering it.

I had no idea pasta sauce came in cans
Used to be the less expensive sauce came that way, not sure now.

This.

In Canada, we are weird. Pasta sauce mainly in cans, gallons of milk come in 3 x 1.33litre plastic bags, we have ketchup potato chips, etc.:D

We obviously have sauce in bottles, but I add so much garlic, pesto, basil and other stuff, I just buy the cheap canned stuff as a base.

;)Ya just can't beat that unspecified "meat" flavor !:p
“Premium” meat flavour. So you know it’s good.;)

In any case, I have been using Cold Steel folders lately in XHP, S35VN as well as BD1.

I don’t know if I have a preference between XHP and S35VN yet. I flip flop back and forth. Very close in performance, wear and corrosion resistance. CS seems to do a good heat treat on their BD1 (Rajah III) as well but it isn’t as good as the other two (Recons and a American Lawman).

XHP is considered by many as a “super steel” but CS’ S35VN is pretty damn good IME.

Happy problems...:)

wonder if this is why the recon 1s have shown up as discontinued. xhps being replaced by s35vn.

both are kinda considered super steels or were anyways.

ole canada......i like y'alls poutine.......every time i go to montreal i eat a ton of that. also like the tim hortons place. eat many croissants and donuts. canned pasta sauce.....we have that down here too.

 Is it true that the mighty men of the frozen North often consume bull moose parts to battle the harsh environmental frigidity ?:p

It's a big country with regional differences indeed. Out west here I can't open my eyes in the AM without an I.V. of Timmies in each arm. And we don't get those plastic bags of milk, it's the big plastic jug. I grew up in Ontario though so I get it, lol. I'm not sweating the steel choices on this end. It's all good.
