I received mine last week, and my first impressions are good thus far.
The plastic haft is split to accommodate the axe head, and drilled for the two bolts that hold it in place.
There are finger grooves built into the head just below the blade where it fits into the haft, and it flares out slightly to fill the hand.
It's quite a bit heavier than all my other hawks which have wooden hafts, but I think that would be an asset for beating your way through a door, window, auto body sheet metal or whatever. I don't know how well it throws, but if you chunk this hog at someone and connect with any part of it, it's liable to put him down for the count, as heavy as it is.
It came unsharpened on both sides, but that's no biggie.
The haft is thick, very thick, and flares out at the bottom end. The rough texture helps keep the thing from wanting to slip, but if it's not grippy enough for some, they'll have to take a Dremel or a soldering iron to it to alter the texture, because wrapping it in 550 cord will make it feel like you're holding a fence post.
The sheath that comes with it is a hinged, folding contraption that seems pretty neat, and it has holes for lashing it to a ruck or LBE, but I fail to see how you would accomplish that without fouling the folding parts. I wonder how well it will stand up to field use.
I haven't tried it out in the field yet, but I will try to get some pics of it tonight, training schedule permitting.
If I can test it out before I leave, I might take this thing to Afghanistan with me in early November and see what I can try it out on over there.
