Cold Steel Trench Hawk

Looks like the handle material (polypropylene) is the same material Cold Steel uses in their Brooklyn Smasher/Crusher lines.

Users seem to report that these bats have some flex, but also truly seem to be indestructible.

I guess I am just being too anal retentive about the little bit of flex the Trench has, and that it will probably be a fairly durable handle material.

Tested my Trench hawk on some logs 4"-6" in diameter. After dressing up the cutting edge, splitting and chopping were no problem. I've got no complaints with the handle. Yes, there is some flex, but it is not a piece of spaghetti. If anyone does not care for the polypropylene handle there is the custom option of crafting your own. From what I have seen here, fellow hawkers are capable of anything. I'm planning a laminate handle as a future project. IMO this hawk is a modern battle axe and a welcome addition.

Had 2 show up today.....best "nasty hawk" for <$50 for sure :)
I'm still more fond of the traditional styles, but this came sharp, and the point is pointy....going to have some fun with these.

Reading this thread, one person said it came unsharpened and two said it came sharp. Can anyone else comment about this?

I got two off of amazon not that long ago (technically only ordered one, but a second was shipped as well.) One came rather blunt, while the other was quite sharp. They were from the same marketplace dealer, so I think it may just be a matter of where you get it from and where they pick their stock up from (or when).

I know there have been more and more regulations in places about shipping blades of any kind with any sort of sharpness to their edge, and some places require you to edge a blade yourself. I've only had one personal instance of the latter, while in a small town near Las Cruces, NM, all knives were sold un-edged due to some local restriction.

Not sure, but these may have some impact on whether it shows up sharp or not.

i anticipate owning one of these, some time in the A.M. on 12/25/2010 :D

i was a little concerned that i would've been better off with something that had a traditional "eye" in the "head" that the handle actually goes into instead of a split handled that sandwiches a tang style head. however, hearing these responses, i'm thinking i might've done a good thing by asking for the Trenchy instead of the Fusion. maybe not, though, as alot of other BF'rs might be buying this as more of a zombie chopper whereas mine is going to be assigned to firewood detail with zombies being a mere afterthought

Don't be too sure about zombies being an afterthought, they're crafty buggers. Keep your trench hawk sharp.

I picked one up last Saturday and this thing is awesome. First thing I did was split some firewood for the pit. It buried itself into the wood all the way to the handle. Its not the best camp ax but it will do fine. I was concerned about the flex in the handle as reported by some. There was some minimal flex but nothing that would make me hesitate to use it in any situation that required it. I was trying to break it, swinging it as hard as I could and nothing. The edge did not chip, roll or dent. I only used it on wood though, so far. The edge came sharp and the spike is tire flattening pointy. It has a good solid weight to it. Keep it oiled and you'll be fine.

The only place I can find them is on a site where the prices are way too high. I hope Cold Steel sends out new shipments soon. They didn't discontinue did they, oh please tell me they didn't!

Thats where I was looking but Amazon is even out of stock on them now, I'm hoping they aren't discontinued. Having trouble getting in touch with Cold Steel by email. I won't price spot as I was warned posting an auction, but in the PAST, Amazon had them for $35 free shipping, and now the only site I can find (not saying any names) has them for $40 plus $15 shipping!!!

Jeez, I never should have looked through this entire thread. Now I want one !!! Something that can hack a rainy day better than my wooden handled hawks.
