Cold steel

Gosh, I guess I should start a new topic. You mentioned the folder and I was wondering what some of the best are. I have an old Spyderco that is just about indestructible. It has a serrated edge that just keeps on cutting. Problem is that it can't be cleaned. I used to be able to flip it open with a flick of my wrist, using my thumb with a snapping action. Now I can't do that. I have tried every way of cleaning it imaginable and it still opens too roughly to do it one-handed. I think they, or someone, make a similar knife that can be taken apart and cleaned. Does anyone know of such a knife?

Yes!;) BTW, IMHO, Spydercos are by far the best, mid-priced production knives on this planet (and any other planet with life we may not of yet)!

As to your question, the Spyderco Delica & Endura IV are take-apart knives:

Hi my name is Tank and Im new to the BladeForum. I ended up here looking to educate myself about knives before going out and buying a knife, but unfortunately Im a little to late. The first thing I did was research on California knife laws to learn about legal issues about carrying a knife around in public. The information I found on that web page recommends the CS Scimitar as one of the authors favorite knives. After that, without thinking much, I bought one on Ebay for 67 bucks, which includes shipping in the price. Now, with my gut intuition, I feel that I made an unwise choice for a folder. I researched more about the scimitar, but could not find much information from anybody that has owned one. Finally I went to the Cold Steel website and watched some of their "Proof" videos on various knives. I learned how ridiculously funny they promote their knives. Just about everything they did on that demo video was impractical to daily usage of a knife. After seeing how they promoted their knives, I feel like I made a bad choice. The ads remind me of those "As seen on TV" infomercials, lol. I don't know what I was thinking, but all I can do now is wait for the knife to come in the mail, and before I say anything more, I will use the knife for a while before I make any furthur judgements. My friend suggested that I should use the knife to chop pineapples in half in mid-air, shes so funny.

All comments welcome, thanks.

You have to be picky with CS but you can get an exellent product.
I have their SF shovel and it is awesome it is actually better than an original spetznaz russian one.
Their jap swords suck so do their tantos(exept the recon in carbonV)
I have a tru flight in carbon V made in the US and it is so good I would not hesitate to use it like a tac knife.
The kukuri machete is worth the money.
The nightshade line is so politicaly incorrect I had to have one.
I would not pay 300$ for a CS folder but Tank you may be surprised with your scimitar. Very light ,good pocket clip and the full serrated one I handled was pretty impresive. If you don't like it get a spyderco byrd cara cara or crossbill(30$).
CS make stuff no one else does like the bat and sarong and plastic knives post 911(gutsy).
I would only buy the shovel or things made of carbonV though.

I like the Spyderco knives also, but I'm wondering what those grips are made of. Most plastic and rubber-based grips get ruined when any petroleum-based product gets on them. They kind of melt. Don't know about the Spydercos though. Can anyone fill me in on that? I prefer the all metal Spydercos, but I'd never buy one unless it can be taken apart and cleaned. I can still use mine, but it doesn't open easy enough for a flick of the thumb and wrist snap opening like I used to do with it. I'm not happy about that.

Thanks for information Unsub and everybody else with info on CS Scimitar. I bought the all black model. And since I don't know much about knives, I bought the plain blade version so sharpening would be easier.

Thanks for suggesting knives, i'll definately look into Syderco knives. First, I should understand what I am going to use a knife for before I buy another one. I want to buy a knife I can carry around everyday. I'll keep the Scimitar for adverture trips.

Carbon V is just 1095 steel with a fancy name.

Cold steel MAKES no knives. NOT a single one. they have them contracted out thru who ever will make them. If you get one that holds an edge, keep it, the steel is good and the guy running the heat treat did a good job, if not, they are worth nothing. Some are made in Japan, some are made in China, Taiwan, Viet Nam, some are even made here. Some knives of the same line are made in different places. I have seen Master hunters with Viet Nam, China and USA marked on them.

to me they are a gamble not worth taking.

CS Master Hunters have never been made in China or Viet Nam. The Carbon V Model is (was) made in the US and the AUS 8 Model is made in Japan.

If you have seen them with Taiwan of VietNam marked on the blade, then I can only assume that theywere knockoffs.

what I've read about CS customer service is enough to keep me away.

If you were to take the time to surf this entire site for comments of CS Cust. Svc, you wil find comments across the entire range of "they suck" to "they are great". I do know that they do their best to accomodate every customer as best they can, Even above and beyond the warranty requirements. They will not cover obvious abuse, but if there is a problem with any of their products, they will generally bend over backwards to fix or replace the item in a timely manner.

Though I do have to admit, that this time of year will probably be the slowest for customer service.

Tank, I also think you may be suprised with the Scimitar. I have a couple of them and after I got used to the grip, I found them to be a lot of fun and a great EDC. I usually carry one when my 6" Voyager is not appropriate, of as a backup to the Voyager if I feel the need to be extra sharp and pointy.

Tank, I to have the CS scimitar, it's a fine knife which should give you years of service. Difficult to compare to a spyderco as they are quite different knives. I only have 3" spydies (2) and comparing them to a 3" voyager I would not like to choose between them. Down to personal choice.:D

I just had my first negative brush with CS customer service and I think they've decided to make it all up to me. I would recommend that anyone that orders from them- keep close track of order details and do not order online from them. Get names, tracking numbers etc.
After years of avoiding their products, I broke down and bought an Urban Dart. Now I want one about 2 inches longer...and three inches longer... you get the picture- I like it A LOT.

Urban Dart UPDATE. I've been wearing it every day for 3 months now, without a single mishap ( Since my initial close call) with an accidental release from the sheath. It appears that the slight modification I made three months ago to the retainer lock's tension was just perfect. I highly recomend this blade. It fast draws faster and more ergonomically than anything else I've ever tried. Cold Steel needed to sell extra sheaths separately ... AND NOW THEY DO!
NEWS FLASH- Cold steel are now shipping extra sheaths at $11.00 plus shipping. The benefits are obvious, multiple sheath mountings make quick changes of blade location a breeze plus, we finally have a dedicated sheath for the Jungle dart- making training and non ferrous deployment a reality.

Care to elaborate on the negative experience? I'd be interested in hearing about what their customer service is like.

hi Tank, I think you will be suprised at the scimitar as well i have it and it works great, comes razor sharp, and is easy to sharpen, it also scares the hell out of people. In fact every body in my scout troop is scared of me now. I just have one recomendation be careful with it the blade can patially open if dropped and the most curved part tends to chip. Over all good choice and of course i am a huge fan of cold steel.

#1: Scouts rule (I'm a Life Scout with Troop 106---ever been to Philmont?); #2: I picked up a Scimitar for $75 and I love it---but the fact is, though I have an expansive Cold Steel collection, about twelve knives ranging from a three inch Voyager to a San Mai Trailmaster---they have no comparison to my Spydercos. Those are the real using knives I carry when I need something to be comfortable and work. If you're thinking about an EDC or camp knife, I highly recommend the Spyderco Military with a CE blade of S30V steel.

I've got a master hunter & srk in carbon v.Also a bushman. All serve their purpose & have worked well for me.No complaints.

Hi,

I currently own:

Scimitar, Plain Edge.
Vaquero 5"
Ti Lite Zytel.
Recon Scout
Recon Tanto
Kobun Aus8
Oyabun
SRK
San Mai Tanto

I like all my above CS Knives a lot.

The main criticisms I usually see on this and other forums are:

Customer Service is poor. I have no experience personally of this. Does anyone have good experiences with CS Customer Service ?

Kraton Handles cause uncomfortable hot spots after prolonged use ? I havn't found this, but then to be fair if I want to cut down a tree I use a chainsaw.

CS serrations suck. Yup I'd generally agree with this one. I have had a Gunsite and Voyager both fully serrated and on both of these the serrations became bent real quick. I found I could realign them with a hammer (they evenually fell off!) and they are great for cutting cardboard and are probably great for SD use, but for field use / bushcraft they suck. Very difficult to resharpen as well.

420 sucks. Yup Id generally agree with this. However 420 is a great material for spike shaped objects. And is also great as part of a laminate blade (ask Fallkniven) I had a CS Spike and it was awesome and actually one of the sharpest bits of 420 I've handled. I also had a Kobun in 420 and that is THE sharpest peice of 420 Ive ever handled! Maybe their Sub Zero Quench did give it special powers!. I am glad however they have now moved to AUS8 for the Kobun, edge retention does seem far better. I so wish they still did the Carbon V version!!!!

The Marketting Sucks. Well it either floats your boat or it doesn't! I personally think its hilarious! Marketting genius. I live in the Police State of the United Kingdom and you cant get much more un PC than the proof videos. Lets face it, its knife porn!

Steels are a bit boring. I like AUS8 but......, They could probably make a better laminate than San Mai III. How about some BG42 sandwiched between AUS8 :D
Carbon V seems very good! I would like to see higher end steels and handle materials certainly for their folders (more like Spyderco or Benchmade)

On the plus side. Generally great knives. Good quality. Carbon V rocks. (who makes it now Sharon Steel Doesn't ?) Innovative designs. Solid and dependable. Cheap! I think the SRK is one of the toughest bushcraft type knives for the price you can get (you can pick one up on ebay for about £30 which is damn cheap for a quality knife in the UK) Bushman is awesome too.

I never liked the look of the triple action. havnt handled one so can'y say.

i own the cs master hunter plus w/gut hook in carbon v steel. i dont think you can beat the quality for the price you pay. the carbon v is awesome! im not sure if it will be around much longer though. i was told the people that made the steel or the entire knife (not sure) will no longer make make it for cs. i believe they said it was camillus that had been making the master hunter and to get one now before the quality dropped.

Hi,

I only have 2 Cold Steel knives - an SRK and a stainless Trailmaster. I've had the SRK for about 13 years now and I've put it thru some pretty nasty work including getting a broken sliding door off my van when I was stuck out in the bush. I used it as a pry bar and it held up fine. I really thought it would break though as I had my whole weight on it trying to get the door over the lip on the edge of the car body. I'm not a little guy either, about 108kgs. The edge took a bit of a hammering, but came back fine with a hit on my diamond stone and strop. I use it for a ton of things around my block of land too and it's great! A no frills hardcore work knife. The only drawback is that I live near the sea and the carbon steel hates the sea air, but a wipe over with an oily rag usually stops the rust.

I bought the stainless Trailmaster about a year ago for heavy work on my land - a lot of scrub and tree work as well as cutting up meat and animal carcasses for my dogs. The blade is extremely strong and it holds an edge really well. The stainless steel doesn't have a problem with sea water either. I have to say amongst all this talk about CS, I love the knives I have, they're tough and do the job they say they do. Some people have a problem with the Kraton handles, but I've never had a drama with them. They're comfortable and don't slip. I often use heavy leather work gloves in the scrub as some of the flora here has nasty thorns and sharpies, the handles grip nicely in the gloves too.

Anyway, the ones I have are great and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
