Cold Steel?

I need "one good knife" for covertly deanimating sentries. Which fine cold steel product would Lynn Thompson recommend for me?

Speaking of Cold Steel, I picked up that "K4 series" Neck knife?. It's too big for me to carry as a neck knife. I don't carry anything from my neck, placed around or over my heart area as I've been in too many incidents where it would have caused injury, but this is one thin, well made blade of VG1 stainless.

It came wicked sharp, and I then proceeded to sharpen it up more. One thing I noticed is the carbides seem larger than in VG10 ( could be the HT, or the Cobalt in the VG10, along with other stuff in it for grain refinement. I really don't know but they are noticibly larger through my scope. Almost D2 sized!). It sharpens very easy, as does VG10.

Wear resistance and corrosion resistance is unknown at this point. At 1.5mm thick at the spine, flat ground down to one of the thinnest factory edges I've seen. I believe the warning it comes with that says" Do not cut bone or frozen food or you may break or chip the knife"

I'd say that about covers it. For $20 I'm going to see what VG1 can and can't do edge wise. So far I like it. ( I have had a VG1 voyager since it came out but I've not reprofiled it, or really changed much.)

Are they the one's who make the "Sable III" I want and cannot get?:grumpy:

Here's how to make a Sable III look real small ...

Every Cold Steel product I have ever handled has impressed me right out of the box.
Spyderco has left me Personally Unimpressed with the products I have come into contact with so far.
The FRN I have handled as felt considerably weaker and more flexible than the Zytel handles... Maybe I just have stronger hands.
As far as me "Imagining" that I Tightened the pins on my Police... It happened, deal with it.
Or maybe I DID imagine it all and you too are a figment of my imagination... (But then, I don't see why I would make up an idiot like you in my mind.)
I didn't "attempt" to engrave that knife... I did Engrave that knife. And if remember correctly, A lot of people congratulated me on a job well done.
As far as my comments being "bizzarre, inane bullshit that isn't even worth responding to" thats fine... Keep your mouth shut like a good little boy while the adults are talking.

All knife companies are in the Business of Making Money.
I don't think Cold Steel is over the top with their advertising... What they do, is show you first hand what kind of abuse their knives with take and still preform.
I DARE Sal Glessner to make a Proof Video involving his knives... He wont.
If he did, it would be a video of him slicing Paper or cutting soft fruit.

Funny you mention that, since Cold Steel says that duplicating those tests constitutes "gross abuse" of their knives and will void your warranty.

Cold Steel is also one of the only companies without a lifetime warranty. Their folding knives are warrantied for one year, fixed blades for five years. That really tells you how they stand by their products.

(But then, I don't see why I would make up an idiot like you in my mind.)

Sorry to look like I'm picking on just you, considering how many others seem to like personalizing their opinions, but this is a classic, unacceptable insult. This forum is for discussing knives, not each other. Knock it off, all of you.

Bad enough your opinions can't focus on the products instead of the companies, but that can be understandable, especially when the company in question makes itself notorious.

Still and all, you know we've heard it all before. A more profitable response to the original honest question would be which Cold Steel knives were better and which were worse.

This sniping at each other, though, has just naturally got to stop.

You want to argue with me? Read my first line:

I used you as the latest example of what's been going on. You were wrong. It doesn't justify it that others were wrong also.

I have been saying this all along... But whenever I post my opinion others attack me as if I were attacking them personally first.
I can't even speak my mind.

I would just like to say that if you think that I started this argument, then why don't you go back to page 6 when I fist replied to this thread... I was being nice, giving my opinion and sharing photos. People were talking to me normally and even complimenting my photos of my engraving.

Then the Mastiff chimes in and starts Jumping all over me.
He is the Instigator here.
Read it for yourself.

I was doing the same thing on the Spyderco website and they Banned me for speaking my mind... And then they Continue to talk smack about someone who can no longer defend themselves... Real nice, hope they are proud of themselves.

Tomahawk, put a cork in it. I told everyone to back off the personal insults. I'm not going through this thread to award infraction points to everyone who got out of line -- or do you want a few yourself? I am being very conservative here by warning without hitting anyone on their permanent record.

Keep poking at me, and I'll take that next step.

Jeez, the fights around here are almost as bad as Mac/PC or intel/AMD or nVidia/ATI fights on computer forums lol

Guess it happens everywhere.

Only Cold Steel I have is a Ti-lite, and that' s a really awesome knife, at a very affordable price.Otherwise they really overhype the knives, but if they wouldn' t..the knives wouldn' t sell.

sorry fellas i just got home and did not take the time to read many of the previous posts, probably should have so please excuse me, but..

no question that the cold steel SRK is or was at some time the BUD/S issue knife, i have a six part video that i taped, part of which shows that knife being inspected and sharpened by SEAL instructors, i believe it was class 226.

i own one (carbon v) and it is a tough SOB, no doubt about it. the destruction test on the other well known forum confirms my impression.

is it as tough as a busse? i doubt that too, but then again, what is? jerry seems to have found the perfect (or as close as it gets) combination of all worlds.

those BUD/S trainees must take great care of their knives, because that high carbon steel is certain to rust in a marine environment.

but the cold steel claim that it is/was the BUD/S issue knife is undisputable. it only shows the knife for a brief period but keep an eye out for it, i think it was the discovery channel.

Pepper, The SK-5 steel that replaced the carbon V is a good steel itself. SOG used it for years on their Bowies. It does OK in the Trailmaster line though I'm not doing any tests to destruction on it either.

Likewise the VG1 is a great stainless. It's no "400 series" steel to be sure.

The big complaint about the trailmaster series isn't what it's made of,or how it performs, but where it's made. Joe

Gents,

Let me share some of my experiences with Cold Steel knives.

1. Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie, Carbon 5 blade. Bought for me by my wife when I was deployed during the first Gulf War. Didn't have the heart to tell her that it was simply to big and heavy for an Infantryman to use as a field knife. It stayed in base camp with the rest of my personal gear. It's main use there was to slash open sandbags. For that it worked well. Oh, and I killed a few snakes with it too. I found that the blade had a tendency to rust badly unless it was wiped down every day, but what the hell, it is Carbon Steel after all. When I got back, my wife had the blade engraved with my name, rank and dates of service. Nice. It now hangs on a wall in a shadow box.

2. Cold Steel Voyager. The only one I bought. Had this one for about a week. During that time I managed to both break the tip and loosen the blade - things that never happened when doing the same tasks with my old G-2 Spyderco Police Model. Bah. Waste of money to me. Went back to using my old Police Model. That one went into the trash.

3. Cold Steel Spike. Tanto blade. Taiwan-made. Unknown steel. Given to me by a friend. He bought it thinking it was "cool", until he found that it was useless for everyday tasks. I said that if he didn't want it I'd take it, so he gave it to me. I also found it useless for anything but stabbing. I now use it as a icepick, which is pretty much all its good for, as my days of possibly having to take out a sentry being long over......

4. Cold Steel Recon 1. Tanto blade, AU8 steel, Taiwan-made. Another one given to me, this time by a client. While I was working on one of his guns he compared his knife with my Manix and decided to "step up" (his words), so he gave it to me. Its ok I guess, but doesn't have the level of fit or finish, or have as good of steel as my Spyderco Manix. Which is why I got it in the first place. Hey, I can't complain, I got it free. This one sits in a drawer. I think I might have opened my mail with it once.

I've carried a large locking folder of one kind or another since 1975. I started toting a Spyderco Police model in early 1992, and have yet to see a reason to change brands. Over the years I've tried various CS and Benchmade knives. I won't say that they "suck", (as some have said about Spyderco) but I will say that they didn't work for me.

Can't say the same about the Spyderco knives I've had. They work.

My 2 cents for what it's worth.

I have owned "losers" in just about ever major production line made, I have also owned "winners" from those same companies. I know many complaints have been made about Cold Steel and the quality of the steel some of their knives are using and to a point I agree. But you also have to look at the price point of those knives. There is a reason the original Trailmasters cost what they did compared to the China knives marketed today at a 5th of the cost. You get what you pay for in this world. You want a Trailmaster that is the equal of the originals then shell out the bucks for the SAN MAI III instead of the cheaper version. You want a high quality sub hilt fighter, buy the Black Bear Classic rather than the cheap OSS. Same for the high end Recon Scout versus the SRK. All Cold Steel has done is to offer knives that fit all budgets, you learn to do that in Marketing 101.
