Gents,
Let me share some of my experiences with Cold Steel knives.
1. Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie, Carbon 5 blade. Bought for me by my wife when I was deployed during the first Gulf War. Didn't have the heart to tell her that it was simply to big and heavy for an Infantryman to use as a field knife. It stayed in base camp with the rest of my personal gear. It's main use there was to slash open sandbags. For that it worked well. Oh, and I killed a few snakes with it too. I found that the blade had a tendency to rust badly unless it was wiped down every day, but what the hell, it is Carbon Steel after all. When I got back, my wife had the blade engraved with my name, rank and dates of service. Nice. It now hangs on a wall in a shadow box.
2. Cold Steel Voyager. The only one I bought. Had this one for about a week. During that time I managed to both break the tip and loosen the blade - things that never happened when doing the same tasks with my old G-2 Spyderco Police Model. Bah. Waste of money to me. Went back to using my old Police Model. That one went into the trash.
3. Cold Steel Spike. Tanto blade. Taiwan-made. Unknown steel. Given to me by a friend. He bought it thinking it was "cool", until he found that it was useless for everyday tasks. I said that if he didn't want it I'd take it, so he gave it to me. I also found it useless for anything but stabbing. I now use it as a icepick, which is pretty much all its good for, as my days of possibly having to take out a sentry being long over......
4. Cold Steel Recon 1. Tanto blade, AU8 steel, Taiwan-made. Another one given to me, this time by a client. While I was working on one of his guns he compared his knife with my Manix and decided to "step up" (his words), so he gave it to me. Its ok I guess, but doesn't have the level of fit or finish, or have as good of steel as my Spyderco Manix. Which is why I got it in the first place. Hey, I can't complain, I got it free. This one sits in a drawer. I think I might have opened my mail with it once.
I've carried a large locking folder of one kind or another since 1975. I started toting a Spyderco Police model in early 1992, and have yet to see a reason to change brands. Over the years I've tried various CS and Benchmade knives. I won't say that they "suck", (as some have said about Spyderco) but I will say that they didn't work for me.
Can't say the same about the Spyderco knives I've had. They work.
My 2 cents for what it's worth.
