The purpose for this thread is to chronicle the building of the collaborative Bowie that will be donated to Kniferights to aid in the fight against the new ban on elephant ivory. It is for people to watch the knife being built, gain some insight as to what goes into such a knife etc. Talk about it, ask questions and make comments about the knife. It is not for discussion about the ban itself. If you want to talk about the ban, please go to the original thread about the ban, check there for up-dates, news and contribute to the discussion.

This knife will be on display at the Blade Show in Atlanta June 6-8, and then presented to Kniferights.
It's going to be a very nice Bowie with some of the best knife-makers and craftsmen (and ladies) in the world working on it, they are;

Gary House,damascus
Bill Burke, blade
Don Hanson, handle
Linda Karst Stone, scrimshaw
Paul Long, sheath
Jim Cooper, Photography
David Boone at Boone Trading is donating the documented elephant ivory for this knife.

My sincerest thanks to all involved, I have received cash donations to help the guys pay for materials, like gold, so the craftsman don't have to incur a huge out-of-pocket expense. If you would like to help with that please let me know. I would like to thank Greg and Steven for cash donations.

And now the build.

Gary House is making the steel, four bars of damascus joined for another weld.

The bars are welded and drawn out.

It yielded three billets, Gary twisted one, put a ladder pattern in one and did both to the third.

Here are the results, the one on the left was the twisted ladder and the one that Bill chose for our knife. The center image shows the tiles before they were drawn out and further manipulated and the right hand piece was the ladder pattern billet.
That's some good looking steel there.

The steel was sent to Bill Burke for the blade forging.

Here's the fine piece of damascus that Gary House made.

The tang and the tip are drawn out. The "pinch" and the bevel are starting to take shape.

The bevel is further drawn out, the knife grows in width, re-curve is added.

The blade is really looking good here, forged right to shape.

Bill will be grinding and hardening this weekend. It will maybe be ready for shipping to Don on Monday. Thanks a lot Bill, Looking forward to more.

We have new pictures from Bill.

The blade is hardened and finish ground. The damascus looks great, and the blade does too.

Bill engraves two of the makers marks. That's BLB for his and GH for Gary House. It looks like it's ready to go to Don Hanson for the handle.

Then, in ink.

This is getting pretty exciting. It won't be long now, and we will see the fruits of our labors come together.

Looking good!!!!!! Looks like Linda is doing about a 100 pounder. Going to be an impressive bull.
