Well, it doesn't have to be an exact duplicate but a variation of the same brand/maker. In days gone by I use to dive right in on a certain knife and ended up with multiples of the knife, I just liked them that much.

Chris Reeve Sebenza, I've owned a lot, from the plain jane ones back with ATS-34 to BG42 and Damascus, it ran the whole range. Unfortunately I do not own any of them now :(

William Henry T-10's I was a sucker for any of those, I forget now just how many versions I had but about every type of scale, I had it. Unfortunately I do not own any of them now :(

Willian Henry B-12, several versions of those, one with the fancy bolster that has the bead work and ivory micarta scales, alas I no longer have any of those either :(

(see a trend here?) ;)

William Henry B15, I've had several of these and still feel that the overall profile of this knife is exceptional, I just found it to be too narrow, but I still would end up getting it several times so far, but as with the others, I unfortunately do not own any of them now.

That brings me to the reason of this thread, not to cry over those long gone, but to look towards the craziness that I am embarking on already! I don't have the duplicate/variation of this one yet, but it is on order ;) as I find it to be a very nice folder.

The MKM Root, designed by Jens Ansø (a favourite maker of mine btw), this one has green micarta inlay pieces, Ti frame and an M390 blade. Lanyard hole that keeps the paracord below the level of the scales, I'd prefer that it was a circular hole and not an odd slot but, at least there is one. I have a wood insert variation on order now. Some may look at the inserts as being too proud, too crisp above the framework, but that adds to the tactile feedback while using the knife and it isn't too crisp or sharp in my opinion. NOW the bits around the frame can be a little keen and I have softened the guard area section slightly using some diamond files and polishing compound to make it not as sharp.

The action of this is strong, meaning you need to want to open it, being a slip joint the blade relies on the back spring to keep it positioned open during use, for your protection and you come to appreciate that quickly. It's not overly strong but stronger than say a SAK folder blade that I use as pull strength example for such comparisons.

A closed length of about 3 3/4" it isn't a large knife

A blade length of about 2 3/4" is, for me, just about right for most edc type chores and the blade is ground down fairly thin around .019" behind the edge and cuts really really well, it also arrived very sharp!

While I don't understand what this guy's saying, I can see that he is putting this knife to some hard cutting chores ;) I found it interesting and you might too...

then takes it into the kitchen, here you can see the edge is thin and sharp to do this work easily, doesn't replace kitchen cutlery but...

So that's my tale, I'll update this thread/post when my wood inlay arrives. Please feel free to share your duplicate/variations here as well.

Edited to add that the lanyard shown is one of my own making and does not come with the knife, in case you guys/gals bought one and wondered just where is that lanyard ;)

Hmm I may have just a wee bit of duplication going on with the Pena front flippers. They're about as close as I've found to being the perfect daily carry knives. I still carry others of course because I like variety, but I always come back to the Penas.

I generally collect one-of's of knives that I like but also collect variations (2 or more) of certain knives that I am particularly fond of (or just got into the habit of collecting for one reason or another), including but not limited to the following:

Benchmade Infidel

Gerber Mark I

Kershaw Shallot
Kershaw Junkyard Dog
Kerhsaw Bump/Offset
Kershaw Starkey Ridge
Kershaw Wild Turkey
Kershaw Talon Ti
Kershaw Turbulence
Kershaw Knockout

Spyderco Endura Clip-it Gen 1
Spyderco Police Stainless Gen 2
Spyderco Military
Spyderco Calypsco Micarta
Spyderco Goddard LW FRN
Spyderco GB 1-2
Spyderco Renegade
Spyderco JD Smith Micarta
Spyderco Wegner
Spyderco Native 1,2 & 5
Spyderco Native Chief
Spyderco Shaman
Spyderco Autonomy 1-2
Spyderco Szabo Folder
Spyderco Jumpmaster 1-2
Spyderco Mantra 1-3
Spyderco Manix
Spyderco Para Military 1-3
Spyderco Perrin PTT
Spyderco Street Beat 1-3
Spyderco Karahawk
Spyderco Yojimbo
Spyderco Mule

ZT 0200
ZT 0300
ZT 0350
ZT 0400
ZT 0452
ZT 0550/0551
ZT 0620
ZT 0850

I do not try to collect EVERY variation of these knives (which would be extremely expensive, difficult and frustrating) but just a representative sample of them. However, I'm also on the look out for gaps in my collection among these and other knives and will buy them if I can.

I have a few dups as well that I usually acquired when I found a "better" version of a knife for my collection and just kept the other as a "user." I've got a Gen1 Endura, Gen2 Police S/S and a Shallot that qualify as one of these

I hear you, I’m a sucker for ZTs....
I own 13 0452s, many doubles, GL, WBW, G-10, TI...
3 0562s (g-10, or/blk, blk)
3 0566s, 4 0801s, 5 0350s, 3 0400s, 3 0200s, 3 0095s...and about 4 cryos, leeks and links, dashes and launch 3s. It’s a disease. Luckily I have this forum to help me 😆

Got two of these Otter Messer 3 rivets:

I’ve had a bunch of Enduras, a few Protech TR3s, multiples of a bunch of Busses. I think the only multiples I have now are those Otters and two Ratmandus and two Mean Street Ergos, but one each of the kin blades are my son’s.

For dupes/variants its the Endura for me. I have several PE versions of the FRN in different colors but lately started to get the more involved. I added the wharncliffe, S30V teal, and ZDP-189. The K390 will be my next one.

I would also like to add a ZDP-189 Stretch to go with my regular VG-10 Stretch 1 and Stretch 2. I learned I like the Stretch over the Endela (which is still a great knife).

I'm a big guy with big hands. I could be totally content with Stretchs, Rat 1s in D2, and Enduras for the rest of my life.

I’m definitely guilty I find something I like and I start researching nuances and variations. Then I start seeing deals that are too good to pass up.

I knew I’d want a couple of the forum knives

A group of Bucks back from the spa with fresh blades, I have many more of them. The 110 is my all time favorite user knife

The dimpled stainless (monel?) handled knives are pretty cool and you can have fun hunting them

These are just the ones found quickly on my phone. I actually can’t think of a knife I own only one of. At this point I know what I like. I’m more apt to buy a duplicate of something than something completely new.

at the height of my knife addiction I had the following thought process: "One of a specific knife" is actually "None of a specific knife" and two is one and so on... (at one time I had 3 of nearly every knife I owned... and if I really liked them, even more!)

I still have a couple dozen Spyderco Military knives... of nearly all varieties... at one time I owned five ZT0777 Damascus... (that are all sold now) kind of funny how retirement will do that to a collection...

so as I sell off my knife collection (because my wife refuses to deal with it after I am dead, which in her words "could be any day") I am finally down to one of each of most of my favorite knives... some are completely gone (no more Kershaw, CKF, etc)

but luckily I still have a few duplicates left, so that I am not choosing which knife to sell, but which duplicate to sell...

and it beats working...

I used to have knife duplicates due to my thinking at the time that I needed to have a knife stashed in every bag, every vehicle, etc. Turns out I really don't need that since I carry a knife on my person all the time, so off they went. When I determined the Bugout was the perfect knife for me, I finally decided to buy a second variation for aesthetic reasons (I liked the green handle and grey blade). Then I realized it was just another choice I had to make in the morning, and I'd rather have just one. There is a different feel to an object when it is your one and only, and you use it everyvday. So into the safe the other went as a backup in case something happened to my blue one. I realized after a period of time that was stupid (for me; everyone is free to do/think as they please) to just have a knife sitting in a box not getting used. So I sold that off, and hopefully to someone who will put it to good use. I know a replacement can be had in just a day or two if needed. I store it at the store now, which is much better for my purposes.

Part of my tool and knife obsession is to make sure my kids are all set. As more and more American brands cheapen their products move overseas or just cease to exist. It makes sense to have lots of everything.

5 Para 2s
Cruewear
M4 x 2. (Both carbon fiber handle true duplicate for this model)
M390 x 2 (blue and red handles)

I generally don’t go for duplicates, but I do have three sets currently:

1. Fiddleback Forge Esquire - One in Osage, one in blue burlap micarta. I love these things and would buy a third if made with the right scales.

2. CRK Small PJ Sebenza - One insingo, one drop point. The insingo is a perfect modern folder for me. I’d sell the drop point, but it brings back too many geart memories.

3. GEC 29 - One each osage, stag, blood red bone. I’ll probably sell the stag and bone.

It is an obsession just not that much with me. I at one time collected lots of guns. I find knives a bit cheaper to collect. Buying selling using for barter can be a lot of fun and finding an old somewhat rare knife at a reasonable price is a lot of fun.
I just keep it at a hobby level of commitment.
