Collecting duplicates/variations...

I have a few variations. I have justified it by telling myself that they are all different and not just duplicates of the same knife and that I like the knife enough that I would have bought them even if I did not already have a close relative in my collection. It also keeps me from buying to many "pre-need replacements".

I do know that there are folks here who have put an incredible amount of effort into collecting every variation, documented or not, of their favorite knife or brand. I think that's a pretty cool direction to take a collection if someone wants to do it. I personally don't want to go that far, but that does not mean I have not spent hours drooling over pictures of their collections.

The funny thing is this is just a small representation. I've got 50+ Boy Scout patterns, close on that in Congress patterns, etc...I've bought 4 Loveless pattern City Knives in the past 12 months alone...I need a cure.

Some really nice ones guys, easy to see why you would do what you do.

My 'spare' arrived today, the wood was quite light, almost in raw condition colour wise, very dull ? smooth but dull. So I did apply some Danish oil on there and some wood polish to protect the scales, making it a bit more richer in colour, very very easy thing to do, I would imagine that your hand oil/dirt would darken the scales as time goes by anyways.

And the new one also fits in the same sheath I made for the first one, as I suspected. Always a plus :)

photo of the sheath with the original knife inside, excellent retention.

Where do I find an Irish jack?

The easiest are going to be either Fighting Rooster's from the 1980's or one of the GEC made 2011 Traditional Annual's. Good luck. I know of four other makers, none of which are easy to find, and there's always Custom. Reese Bose makes a nice one...

Thank you.

I have a bunch of Barlows. Not sure how many medium stockmen. Six Hinderers. Three Chris Reeve's. Oh, and four Laconicos. Some duplicate Spyderco, ZTs & BMs...........But, no I really have no idea what you're talking about.

Just received another Spyderco Native variation - a SS PS AUS10 Native 2 which you can see here in Post #9269 on Pg 464 in the Latest Acquisitions thread w/the rest of my Native "variations:"

Update 07/10/2021:

LOL!

I just bought 2 more variations of the Native: a used Gen 1 FRN PS Gin-1 and a NOS Gen 4 CF PE VG10. Pics to follow as soon as I receive them. That just leaves a Gen 2 SS PE AUS10 and a Gen 3 FRN PE VG10 to find.

Oh yes I have done this more than a few times now.

Cold Steel Voyagers, Recon 1s, Spartans and Broken Skulls.

Spyderco Endura 4s, Delica 4s, Manix 2s, and ParaMilitary 2s.

Just bought a Bestech Artic in brown G10 and liked it so much that I bought another in dark grey.

Have a couple of the Tuya Knives Bruisers in green and brown G10. I see that they came out with a nice dark blue G10 and even Micartas in red and brown.

This makes for an interestingly themed thread, Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley , and is kinda close, though more narrowly focused, to one I've been thinking of starting. I may still do that, but in the meantime I'll be more than happy to play in your yard.

Except for two of my three current 710's, none of my "duplicates" are exactly the same, and even those are slightly different as one is modded with standoffs. Like others here, I have several multiples of specific models that vary by steel, operation, blade, color, handle, or other. Here's a couple of those from two different makers to get started, one of which is I my pocket today.

Hinderer XM18 3.5" Skinny's--one Sheepsfoot in 20CV, the other a No-Choil Slicer in M390...

...the other being Spartan Harsey Folders, one PJ in S35VN and the other a Northwest Coast Edition in S45...

...and a group shot of the locksides of all four.

Pretty interesting thread.

So far I haven't collected two of the same knife. Earlier in the hobby I didn't even have two of the same brand. I do now own 4 Spyderco knives and I think 4 case knives.

Nice collection ChazzyP ChazzyP and K ktataragasi it's just something that every now and then people do get involved in, usually with the thought 'yikes what if I one day LOST this and find they are no longer making them!!!' kind of scenario, at least for me that's how it sort of started ;)

I am also a sucker for the Civivi model Rustic Gent, had several, now down to one, BUT a damascus version is being delivered today and I'll add a comparison shot of the two at that time, in the meanwhile here's the beauty I currently have. These are some of the nicest, well made folders I've ever owned. The back spring is flush in all positions, closed, half stop and full open, well done. And of course there is the hidden lanyard pin, always a favourite when I see that done.

and here's a shot of one that I had, but have since moved to a new home...

I think the only knife I have duplicates of currently is the Spyderco Delica. I've carried one of some variation (versions 1- 4) since the original. Funny thing is that in the last few years I have carried my Spyderco Chaparral LW or Rhino more.

Well, it doesn't have to be an exact duplicate but a variation of the same brand/maker. In days gone by I use to dive right in on a certain knife and ended up with multiples of the knife, I just liked them that much.

Chris Reeve Sebenza, I've owned a lot, from the plain jane ones back with ATS-34 to BG42 and Damascus, it ran the whole range. Unfortunately I do not own any of them now :(

William Henry T-10's I was a sucker for any of those, I forget now just how many versions I had but about every type of scale, I had it. Unfortunately I do not own any of them now :(

Willian Henry B-12, several versions of those, one with the fancy bolster that has the bead work and ivory micarta scales, alas I no longer have any of those either :(

(see a trend here?) ;)

William Henry B15, I've had several of these and still feel that the overall profile of this knife is exceptional, I just found it to be too narrow, but I still would end up getting it several times so far, but as with the others, I unfortunately do not own any of them now.

That brings me to the reason of this thread, not to cry over those long gone, but to look towards the craziness that I am embarking on already! I don't have the duplicate/variation of this one yet, but it is on order ;) as I find it to be a very nice folder.

The MKM Root, designed by Jens Ansø (a favourite maker of mine btw), this one has green micarta inlay pieces, Ti frame and an M390 blade. Lanyard hole that keeps the paracord below the level of the scales, I'd prefer that it was a circular hole and not an odd slot but, at least there is one. I have a wood insert variation on order now. Some may look at the inserts as being too proud, too crisp above the framework, but that adds to the tactile feedback while using the knife and it isn't too crisp or sharp in my opinion. NOW the bits around the frame can be a little keen and I have softened the guard area section slightly using some diamond files and polishing compound to make it not as sharp.

The action of this is strong, meaning you need to want to open it, being a slip joint the blade relies on the back spring to keep it positioned open during use, for your protection and you come to appreciate that quickly. It's not overly strong but stronger than say a SAK folder blade that I use as pull strength example for such comparisons.

A closed length of about 3 3/4" it isn't a large knife

A blade length of about 2 3/4" is, for me, just about right for most edc type chores and the blade is ground down fairly thin around .019" behind the edge and cuts really really well, it also arrived very sharp!

While I don't understand what this guy's saying, I can see that he is putting this knife to some hard cutting chores ;) I found it interesting and you might too...

then takes it into the kitchen, here you can see the edge is thin and sharp to do this work easily, doesn't replace kitchen cutlery but...

So that's my tale, I'll update this thread/post when my wood inlay arrives. Please feel free to share your duplicate/variations here as well.

Edited to add that the lanyard shown is one of my own making and does not come with the knife, in case you guys/gals bought one and wondered just where is that lanyard ;)
Well. Heck, thought if I bought the lanyard, I got the knife free. Nice work!

I like the Buck 112..My Brother David took me to the Blade Show back in 2007 where he displayed his 110 collection and after that I started collecting rare odd, prototype, safety award 112's. I guess I'm close to a hundred oddball 112's now and there is no cure..But you can treat the symptoms.
