Collecting duplicates/variations...

this thread got me to thinking, not including traditionals or SAK's (I have lot's of duplicates there) I do have several modern duplicates:
BM Adamas, 1 regular, 1 auto
BM Contego 1 regular, 1 M390
BM Stryker 1 regular, 1 in M4
Spyderco Military, one in s110v, one in s90v and one Ti with s30v
CR Umnumzaan 1 tanto, 1 drop point

there are more, but you get the idea....

<<Apologies, my hosting site is challenged today>>

I’m not a collector purely for the sake of collecting & I don’t go after every variant of knife-X. That said, I have picked up a few duplicates of knives that I really really like.

First & foremost, the Spyderco Southard. The bearing/washer issue is kinda jenky, but otherwise, what an amazing knife!
It was my first grail, back when I was just seriously getting into knives. I’ve used the crap out of one off ‘em. The dlc model sees light use. One stays LNIB, because, you know….

Later, I found a good deal on an Umnumzaan, and figured I’d see what CRK was all about. I really like the ‘Zaan, and a few years back they were (IMO) a bit under valued on the secondary.

Oh, hehehe, then there are Large & Small 21’s.

And finally, the Delica. One stays in my riding bag, one on my workbench, and the OG serrated D1 goes on an occasional adventure. I’ll probably pick up another if the pink & black model sticks around…‘cuz I definitely need another knife…

I’ve been following a path of this blade shape, from top to bottom. I was raised on Opinel, settling on the #9 size, then found Benchmade and on to GEC. Each is a little different but I judge all of them based on what i’ve learned from the Opinel.

I've tried in the last few years to move out knives that don't get carried and used as well as resisting purchases of same. I've kept a couple drawer queens that I'm particularly fond of, but have tried to stay away from "collecting" per se. A notable exception is this case of Sages, as I was taken fairly early on by Spyderco using a single platform to celebrate the innovators/popularizers of various locking mechanisms. These each get carried only rarely as I'm more of a bigger knife guy, but they do afford a good grip in hand utilizing Spyderco's well-designed forefinger blade choil and forward thumb ramp.

I have 2 sets of duplicates.

My first edc 20 plus years ago was my third generation Delica. I also have 2 fourth generation ones.

My current edc is a first generation Mnandi. I have 3 others: laddered, raindrop and basket weave.

I have 2 Sebenza's, a large pj insingo blade and a small Starbenza. I am looking to add a pj damascus but need to decide on the size and pattern. I am not a huge fan of basket weave and the raindrop ones vary a lot in pattern so I might stick with laddered. I'd love a damascus Starbenza but I don't think that's an option.

Looks great man. I've looked at that model several times just haven't jumped on it yet.

You also make me want to be a lanyard person....

thanks and doesn't everyone want to be a lanyard person ? ;)

that new combination that I started using is just ideal for me, attractive and quite handy.

I do the multiples and duplicate thing too but it causes me anxiety. When the next one doesn't live up to the quality of the first one I usually hide it on the shelf, both of us knowing they they are a disappointment. But I take pleasure seeing my 5 ZT0392's lined up together.

OK, here's two quite different versions of the same model--the Rexford designed ZT0801--the first heavily pimped, anodized with a hand-sanded blade, handle slabs, and clip as well as a custom pivot.

The other a factory BlackWash model with an MXG clip.

Well, I picked up 2 new Spyderco Native variants in just a couple of days after picking up a Gen 2 SS AUS10 PS variant too. Wasn't specifically looking for them. They just "popped up."

The 1st is an alternative variation of the Gen 1 FRN Gin-1 with a PS blade that I picked up off of EB and the 2nd is a Gen 4 CF VG10 PE blade (marked w/collector #060V - "v" for variant) that I picked up from an online dealer that just happened to have it "in stock."

Paid top $ for the Gen 4 because I've never seen one offered before but now that I've bought one, they'll probably pop up like weeds for much less. LOL! ;)

The Gen 4 is interesting in that it is made in Seki, Japan w/smooth solid CF scales and VG10 steel. It is a really nicely made knife; fit/finish are excellent.

All other Natives (except the Gen 3 & 4 both made in Seki, Japan) were made by Spyderco in Golden, CO using other steels. Only the Gen 3 (which is numbered C78 and appears to be a variation on the Gen 1 FRN) and the Gen 4 (numbered like the other Natives C41) used VG10.

The main difference between the Gen1 & 3 being the use of a wire clip instead of a single bolt head metal clip-it and a minor re-conturing of the swedged spearpoint convex ground blade and FRN scales.

The Gen 1 FRN Gin-1 PS pairs with the PE version that I already owned. The Gen 4 CF VG10 PE fills a generational gap in the collection but also pairs well w/the Gen 5 CF Fluted S90V PE (2nd from bottom in the photo below) that's also already in the collection.

Will now be on the lookout for a Gen 2 Native SS PE and a Gen 3 Native 3 FRN PE and/or PS to "complete" the set but this is what the set looks like now:

Great thread. I am a victim of my own OCD addiction. I have way too many variants of PM2, Para 3, and Manix 2 knives. Finally branched out and now have a Hinderer and two CRK's. Those two brands have now made me evaluate my obsession with Spydies. Plan to diversify now. Hard part is determining which variants stay/go. My tastes are changing as I evolve and willing to spend more money. Would like to only have a couple max of each brand.
